Player Portrait by Wetdryvac

September 14th, 2009 9:08 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Paint a fellow player - we'd really prefer that you use their player photo as your model, though. Any medium/style, but let us know what you end up doing with it.

Using the player photo of mainnani034841084363.jpgPeacekeeper Borg Rikaazu - after asking permission, of course - I'm sitting down to paint. I'm using the watercolor inversion technique I use for most of the work I've done over at wetdryvac.net but adding in a bit of oil pastel in a couple of places to handle an interpretation of the black-work their player picture has in place.

* * *

This turns out to be significantly more frustrating than usual, since as will become apparent, I completely suck at drawing humans in watercolor. Those traditional techniques you see other people use? Elude me. Delude me as well. It probably doesn't help that I've got a dozen other work related projects on the desk in front of me as I paint, and they keep distracting me.

* * *

But! Perseverance is mine. We'll see how this looks...

It would help, seriously, if I had less clutter on my desk.

And then the inversion for the final product:

Peacekeeper Borg Rikaazu, I fear I've biggered your chin somewhat. For this, my apologies. However, the original paper piece, ala, "...but let us know what you end up doing with it," Is yours for the asking. I'll package it in a tube and mail, if you like. Otherwise, I'd love to put it in my portfolio, either physically or digitally, as this is one of the very few people-portraits I've ever been even remotely happy with.

So, digital yours for the taking: May I put the digital in my online portfolio?
Paper yours for the taking: If you don't want that, may I put it in my portfolio?

Working with this can be daunting. Perhaps I should clear it. Yes, that is soy sauce on the back right.

*grins* And this pic is why I chose this person - I love the expression here, and the makeup method.

You can't see much difference between the two images, but the difference on the inversion is that the colors will come out properly rich.

Yes, I lost all sense of proportion on their chin. I'm so very sorry.

Aww, I like it! You did add a bit to my chin, but artistic liberty is something I value. I'd love a physical copy if you're willing. ^_^ Nice job!!
