Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, and what is the use of a book, thought Alice, without pictures or conversations?

I'm completely obsessed with the Alice books. In fact, the Hero and I have storytime every so often, and I'm currently reading Through The Looking Glass to her (which we prefer to Wonderland). Have you ever seen the Jan Svankmajer movie Alice? Very creepy, lots of stop-animation involving little bird and lizard skeletons. Needless to say, it's amazing.

Cool, Scarlett.

Sorry, Zamaluco, for treating the comments here as a message board.

I'm also quite a fan of the Alice books. (Enough of a fan that I've been picking Carroll themed hostnames for all my computers for years. At the moment I'm writing this on jabberwock, rather than on my ancient laptop, snark.)

But, I'm an even greater fan of Svankmajer. Although I like some of his short stuff even better, Alice is always the film I recommend to people. Carroll and Svankmajer are a perfect match - no other version of Alice even comes close to matching the wonderfully dark and trippy tone of the books, even though they treat the narrative more literally. I suppose it's not surprising to find someone else who's a fan of both.

I recently discovered the Carroll collection at librivox. Good stuff, although not perhaps quite as good as a live reading. The 34 different readers all reciting Jabberwocky is strangely compelling.

What a small world, I was having aconversation about Svankmajer not more than two days ago. Who knew there was a place where so many people know about chekoslovakian claymation?

Of the many productions of Alice-related shows, films, etc. I've already seen so many that they start to run together.... except for the abhorrent (and yet somehow exciting) 1985 musical starring the silliest Beatle as the mock turtle.

We've been particularly inspired by the brevity and modern sensibility of "the shortest Alice movie ever made." It brings Alice's darker side out in a way the Svankmajer only hints at. Also the Czech's recurring usage of the girl's lips repeating identifying the Queen makes me uncomfortable.
