Trespassing by zer0gee

March 14th, 2008 11:07 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Go somewhere you are not allowed to go.

We went to Gary, Indiana with the intention of trespassing in or around one of the many awesome steel mills there. Instead, we found a gorgeous abandoned train station. There were NO TRESPASSING warnings stenciled all over the outside of the building.

If you've never been to Gary, it's hard to appreciate the aura of the place through mere description. Gary is a dead city. It used to be an industrial metropolis, producing steel and manufacturing automobiles. Now, there are no people walking on the sidewalks, few cars on the streets. Though it is incredibly filthy, it somehow feels completely sterile - the quality of the light is different; clinical, institutional. There are two railroad lines, one on either side of the station - one freight, one commuter - and even though trains were running past the building regularly the whole time we were there, we felt completely isolated.

I am an avid Armaggedonist, and this is the most post-apocalyptic place I've ever been.

This is grand! Fire damage and bullet casings?

Beautiful pictures. It's tempting to try to visit there, as it's 40 minutes from here. You get my vote for the pictures, even though the description of the task itself makes it just a tad impossible to complete.
Heh, I was wondering why this hadn't got many votes yet. Forgot that people generally aren't up at 4 AM, and this was posted right before midnight. Still getting used to this site.
Again, great job, and also -- the last line in your description sounded like an anchor's tagline. Or something from an Apple commercial.

Yeah, guys, the praxis is generous this weekend but take a look at this one too!
