Reverse Shoplifting by Ariock Knight

July 25th, 2008 5:09 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Insert an object into a store. Make sure your object can be bought.

For the last month I've been dealing with a problem person challenging my use of the name "Ariock" and I've been talking to some of my online friends about it. One of those friends created a little banner for me, and it was a hit among my friends.
Ariock Has a Posse

At around the same time, I'd become enamored with a little game for the Nintendo DS called "The World Ends With You," and one feature of the game is that there are pins or buttons that the player collects that endow their user with powers. Several of my friends started getting RL pins based on the pins in the game.

A third bit of serendipity was that I was attending a gaming conference (the Penny Arcade Expo or PAX) where several members of the messageboards were planning to get buttons made of their avatars that they would then trade with other members. Thus by the end of the Con, they'd have a pin from each member.

I decided to get my own pins made and to give them out at PAX, but also to give them to my friends who had supported me during this time. So I had them made and rushed the order so that I could get them before ANOTHER conference that I attended this past weekend (ARGFest-o-Con 2008 in Boston). ARGFest drew many of the people who are friends of mine, and I wanted to be able to give these to them.

That's all well and good, but this is a task about Reverse Shoplifting....

Anyway, the first day of ARGFest-o-Con, I'd been carrying several of the buttons around in order to give them to friends as I ran across them. At one point, I was shopping with two friends, and went into a funky little shop with interesting postcards and jewelry and handbags and a button display and....

"Hm. Buttons. Wouldn't it be cool to slip one of my buttons in with the others?"

There was only the one shopkeeper. She was distracted by hmrpita. I pulled a pin out and popped it into place among the others.

It's on the far left there.

A little later, we continued on to a record shop where there was another display of buttons. I placed one there as well, but didn't feel comfortable trying to take a photo. I think this is probably enough proof for now.

Credit goes to hmrpita for reminding me about this specific task after the fact, otherwise I'd have never thought to post it.

I love how you look just like Gordon Freeman on the button.

Sorry we didn't have a chance to do any co-tasking while you all were in town! Staying up past my bedtime to see the movie pretty much wiped me out for the weekend. I hope you had a good time at the con and it was nice meeting you both.
