Unorthodox Caroling by Eccoglyph, Spidere, K prime, Nan O'fith

October 31st, 2007 10:10 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Go door to door singing carols from any genre OTHER than Christmas music. Accept proudly all gifts of figgy pudding.

A month ago, Spidere sent an email to all the players listed within 50 miles of DC. Most of them never responded, having sadly gone inactive. But Nan O'fifth was excited; her words were "I can't even begin to say how much I would enjoy a good round of Unorthodox-caroling."

It was clear that this had to happen.

Cue October 31st. Four players, three friends. Seven costumes. Seven songs:

This is Halloween
The Monster Mash
The Addams Family theme
Zombie Jamboree
Thriller
Poisoning Pigeons in the Park
The Oogie Boogie Song

We were lucky to have several real singers in the group, and to get together early enough to listen to and practice the songs for a couple of hours before heading out into the neighborhood.

We were a hit. A big hit. Several people invited us in, or asked for an encore, or simply seemed to really like us. It was a blast. There was a lot of energy, and we all had a really good time. So much so that we're planning to do it again next year.

This was great fun, and I recommend it to everyone. I have to compare it to Bigger, Better, or More Bizarre to find something with the same feeling of excitement to it. Some highlights from the evening were: singing for groups of trick-or-treaters in the streets, getting a "tip" in extra candy from a little girl, and after singing the Addams Family theme, having the woman at one house speak French (with Spidere responding appropriately).

The most important measure of success, of course, is that we ended up with a ton of candy.

What an awesome idea, and by the look of it, exceptionally executed!

Votes for success!

Lack of audio

This is entirely my fault. I actually walked around the whole night with my recorder in my pocket, unused. I'd planned on recording all the songs and thought that would be great to include, but by the time we left, I'd just forgotten about it in all the excitement. Next time, I promise!

Indeed, I would not be offended if anyone chose not to vote, due to lack of audio. I might make the same choice, as I completely agree with Susy/Momerath/dyctiostelium. Frankly, I expected better of myself. (I actually left my camera behind once during the night as well, so nearly lost photo proof, too! My only excuse is that I was having too much fun. :)

Nah, it wasn´t made for audio proof, is just that one gets greedy. Besides, let´s not take away the credit for putting together an Unorthodox Caroling Ensemble, the excellent choice of repertoire and wardrobe and the tip from the little girl.

Grand work! I'd love to have heard it, but perhaps that just means it'll have to become a tradition so I can join in next year!

Hooray!

I'm glad someone decided to do this task and executed it well! Hopefully I myself will be doing it soon if I can wrangle some more people...

As Halloween is my all time favortie holiday, I feel quite strongly that Halloween Caroling should become a tradition, and be performed every year.

(as for the lack of audio, I know most of these songs by heart.... so I heard them in my head while I read and noticed nothing lacking)
