Restoration by Evieboo, JTony Loves Brains

September 5th, 2007 3:48 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Many of these tasks completions are temporary: transitory bursts of inspired silliness and brilliance that fade away with the passing days.

Choose a task completion that tickled your fancy but, alas, is no longer with us.

Restore it to its former glory.

The wonderful Doorhenge installation in Golden Gate Park will go down, I think, as many sf0 folks favorite task completion of all time. It had so much going for it... size, major collaboration, a certain overt secretiveness, and just a pinch of illegality, all documented perfectly. Many thought it would be torn down within days, but it stayed, and stayed, and stayed...

Until one night someone tore down more than half, leaving the majestic henges in writhing masses on the fallen eucalyptus leaves.

I had shown it to my son in it's glory a couple weeks ago, but my daughter had never seen it. After picking her up at school today we were driving by the buffalo and she said she'd like to see it, so I took her over, thinking it was still intact..

On seeing the awful vandalism done to the lovely graffiti painted doors, we decided to try and throw a couple back up. Without a hammer it was a little tough to drive the stakes back into the ground, so we went home, got a hammer, and came back.

We worked for about 3 hours or so putting the 6 henges that had fallen back up and pounding them back into place. I lifted and held the henges up while she hammered. A couple came out a little crooked, but we fixed whatever we could. Unfortunately many of the brackets were bent and the bolts torn out, so some are less sturdy than they were, but we tried to bend things back into shaped as much as possible.

The satellite dish was a gift from some of the weekend revelers, as were some mardi gras beads, a comb, and a little stuffed koala bear on a ceramic stand. I unbent the satellite dish and put it in an appropriate place while my daughter wrapped the beads around the comb and hung them on one of the doors. The koala we placed by the explanation notice.

My son, JBryce would have been a great help, and wanted very much to be there. Unfortunately he was ending his visit to Seattle and was unavailable. I did want to give him a mention as an honorable collaborator here.

It was just one of those moments when you see something wrong and you just fix it, almost without thinking. All in all it was a lovely afternoon.

Wait, so you guys fixed the Doorhenge yourselves?

With no other players?

Wow.

I'm convinced the Doorhenge fell down due to it's lacking of my Mojo, but it appears you and your family re-Mojo-fied it. Thank you!!!!

I still can't thank you enough. I am so grateful right now.

Just the two of us, making henges in the sky...

Yup, it was just us.

Seriously, if I had thought about it at all I would have balked, but we just sort of walked up to the doors, I grabbed on to one (as can be seen in the pictures) and just hoisted it up. Helps being big, plus having such an able hammer-er (those rebar stakes are tough to get into the ground sometimes, but she's a trooper).

What I'm amazed about is the timing. From what I can tell, it came down between 3 and 10pm on Monday, and the call was out to start fixing it at 6 on Tuesday. My daughter and I just found it, not knowing anyone else would be along to fix it, and put it together, finishing not more than an hour before other folks showed up.

Anyway, my family and I are honored to have been mojo conduits!

You know, after I heard word that the Doorhenge had fallen (thanks everybody who checked to see if I was OK) I decided to visit and assess the damage. I came by Tuesday night and it all looked OK (but it seemed like some of the henges were in different spots...curious...)

I thought maybe some other players were tricking me into thinking it fell over. Now I see the light! And the Mojo!

Nicely done!

Kudos to you both. That's awesome.

That you did it spontaneously, without intentionally trying to befuddle the reconstruction crew, makes it even better.

totally splanked™!!

Best restoration ever!! This task might as well get retired right now. I look forward to seeing you two do more awesome family tasking (with your son too) in the future! SF0 brings families together! Yay!
