Left-Handed Screwdriver by Haberley Mead
March 19th, 2008 1:31 PMAt first I was loath to do this Task, as my days have been pretty same-y and, let's face it, boring. So when I realised I was going home for Easter, I thought 'oh brilliant, now I can go and do something for this task!' Then my mind gt to wondering, and I realised it would probably be even better to do it on the day of the move, as I would be doing plenty of extra things that day!
On the day in question, I was up well past midnight before I slept, so everything started from there - I wrapped my hand up on the stroke of midnight, with a pair of socks clenched in my fist to ensure that I completely disabled myself. Admittedly it was a pain to do this to myself, and it ended up looking like I was the victim of some horrific accident, but never mind - it did the job. The first problem I found was using the computer - the mouse was fairly simple once I changed the buttons round, but the keyboard seemed to have something against me... I am a by-the-book three-finger typist, and I can type as quickly as most people using their entire hands with only a couple of digits, but unfortunately the two main ones were now wrapped around a sock. This could take some time.
Then came sleep - an uneasy one, mind you, as I'm used to sleeping on my right hand and the socks made that a lot more difficult. I understand that the task could have probably been put on hold while I slept so I could take the DisabilityGlove(tm) off, but I guess I'm just too determined a Tasker for that. The next fun came in packing up to go home - not as difficult as you might think, but you can only really take half as many carrier bags in a single hand (obviously).
I could detail the rest of my day in such anal detail to broe the tits off you, but I won't. Instead, see this handy little graph I plotted of everything I did today, against ease of said task and difference to doing the task with both hands.
In conclusion: Very much fun, and iinteresting to see what difference it makes. Also a great deal of fun to see people's reactions at first glance: "Why are you writing with your left hand OH MY GOD WHAT'S HAPPENED??" (Thanks dad...)
Most fun: Brushing Teeth - to put toothpaste on, bite toothbrush in mouth and hope you can hit the end with the paste.
Least fun: Carting heavy boxes upstairs. My hipbones want to disown me now...
The Guitar

Unable to play my real guitar for the day, this was slightly easier. Still couldn't play half the more difficult ongs without my hand though...
The PAIN!

You can't see it very well here, but the top hand is bright purple and crooked... Guess wrapping it up tightly for 24 hours and not using it isn't too good for it!

I think when I made the graph I more meant that it was much the same (and much easier than the other tasks), but now I come to think of it brushing my teeth WAS easier...
Nice.
Yay, Guitar Hero.
I'm still waiting for a Guitar Hero-themed task.
Oh, and your graph immediately reminded me of
Right, I'm now gonna be working on a GH-themed task... it may take me some time...
I have an issue with that fruit-graph. I happen to believe that oranges are more easy AND more tasty than watermelons and seeded grapes. But I like the hand-graph.
I agree with Inky.
I'm really just voting for the graph.
I love that type of graph :)
Vote for graph, and the commitment to disabling your dominant hand.
Does that graph mean than you found using the mouse and brushing teeth to be significantly easier with the non-dominant hand? Maybe you'll have to start doing it that way from now on.
