Up and Up and... Up by Iaman
December 8th, 2007 1:39 AMStage 4: The Initial Climb
When scouting out the area, I planned my path out well. This path involved climbing a support pillar designed as a sort of ladder (the gray pillars), up to a suspended platform (the pale yellow hanging thing), up the ladder on that, through a trap door (it's red and hard to see), and onto the scaffolding. I'm not a thousand percent certain, but I'm pretty sure it's at least thirty feet. It certainly seemed like more. The building is several stories tall.

Reaching the pillar, I began my climb. It was an arduous task, as I am still slightly out of shape, but I managed to make it up without a problem. Reaching the yellow platform, I took a bit of a breather. Feeling more confident with myself, I smiled a bit. "I can do this," I thought to myself.
Stage 5: The Second Climb
Eventually, I started climbing the yellow ladder. When I reached the top, I placed my hand on the trap door handle. I push up, but something is not right! No, something is quite wrong! And, so, I sing this song!~
Anyway, something really is quite wrong! The trap door only opens up about thirty degrees! Luckily, I am skinny, so I managed to squeeze my way through. I close the trap door behind me, and immediately look around to see what the problem was. Moving a bit of snow around, I spot a board that had been placed over part of the trapped door and jammed against a slightly raised part of the scaffolding. I assume this is to prevent something like this from happening. Guess they didn't expect a skinny guy to come around. I move this a bit for an easier escape, if need be, then I take some photos.

Stage 6: The Last Upward Jaunt
Finally at the scaffolding, I had naught but one more climb to reach my flag. This climb proved the trickiest of them all, however. I could not immediately find a way to do it, as there were essentially no handhelds and it looked like I was going to have to climb six or seven feet of sheer concrete! Following the scaffold around the building a bit, though, I located some concrete blocks that had been newly placed, and still had those screws the place in between the blocks in them. This was my lucky chance! I grabbed hold of the ledge above, barely, and put most of my weight on my arms. In this manner, I used the screws to get my legs up and on top of the ledge. I was on top of the world! Or, at least, the current construction.
This story continues in the Capture a Flag task.

Up (pillar) and up (ladder) and up (concrete blocks with screws)! As clean a completion as they come... did you even shudder, at least a little?
I wonder how the down way was.
My hat is off.
There was much shuddering to be done at about 2/3 of the way up the pillar, but after that the adrenaline rush pretty much overcame everything.
The way down was only terrifying because I was worried public safety was going to come any minute. According to my friend, they came down Belden about a minute before I started descending the ladder, around while I was cutting the flag off. Lucky for me, I guess, because that scaffolding makes a lot of noise!
This is quite impressive, but I guess I'm a worrywart about safety issues. So, I'm voting 'cause it's cool, but hoping that your future tasking doesn't take you to a place where you fall off.
Your tasking threesome deserves multiple votes.
bloody hell man, i couldn't do this. you got my vote.
Snow + scaffolding = trouble. Points for the guts my friend.
