INSTRUCTIONS: Assume a collective identity for the purpose of undermining a system of control.

rubinzombies18444.gif

P00n:
This all started after the sad events involving Bubblesort and I thought to myself, "damn, I wish Rubin was still here to call this guy out on his bullshit" and then I thought..."wait, Rubin can be here"

and so it began.

a few minutes later I got a message from Rubin..it was a giggle...Rubin does not giggle, (this is not entirely true, but we will skip that for now).....why does Rubin have so many pictures of Rabbit on his player page?

and then there were two.

soon a couple more Rubins popped up. then a few more. and so I decided to make it an official event. I'll do anything really to promote my campaign

The Rubins Massed!!

They were collected but they had no direction. they were voiceless. and so I added a voice, I began Posting "Rubin hates it" everywhere and spouting Rubinisms until a better opportunity was afforded to me

I got a second email from Rabbit/Rubin which read

No I'm Rubin.

Won't you please collaborate with me and all the other Rubins on http://sf0.org/tasks/I-Am-Spartacus/

It's much more appropriate than Internet Revolt.

-Rubin

ahhh the genius.

I flew over a response

YES GREAT IDEA!!!!

we need to do something more to undermine....and we need to get the creators to open the task up for more people so whoever wants to can join!!

do you want to email every Rubin with the idea?

Rabbit

Yes, I just noticed that it was limited to 10. That sucks. We're up to at least 21 Rubins at the last count. I think commenting as much as possible and just plain being confusing is a good start.. :)

Also curious to see if this would count as Epic Collaboration in some way or not.

P00n:
think we should just keep it to Spartacus...don't want to milk it too much. they will open it up for us....we need to do something specifically to undermine sf0....and its system....I suggest we all agree to flag EVERYTHING..all tasks will get disapproved and everyone will go back to lv 1..the creators can reinstate the tasks so no permanent harm will be done, but the system will have failed!!!

I don’t have much time...right now. would you mind drafting an email to all the Rubins and get enough responses to make it happen? tell them we will start at 2pm pst today with the flagging.

sound good?
other suggestions?

Rabbit:

hehe that's pretty ambitious.. everything? I doubt we could get everyone to do that, but it would be quite ambitious. I just worry that it's not reversible or that it would cause a lot of trouble for the creators. What are you thinking? I'm headed out of town this afternoon, so unfortunately I won't be around for the weekend.

What about the opposite. Having all the Rubins submitting fake proof for as many tasks as possible. Super point inflation without pissing off people with their real tasks. Maybe an image that has sombrero and text of "RUBIN NEEDS NO PROOF". and we can put "RUBIN NEEDS NO PROOF" in the text so the creators can later go back in, search for that text, and just clear out all those submissions.

-Ed... err Rubin

ok, so I admit, I was excited and I missed nearly the entire last half of that message...the whole making it easy for the creators thing...It was probably a good Idea that got tackled and suffocated by my ADD

Rabbit's Letter:

Faithful Rubins,

First let me thank you for joining our cause. You are a brave and valiant lot. A spur to valiant and magnanimous deeds, whose present courage may beat down our foes, and fame in time to come canonize us; For, I presume, brave Hector would not lose so rich advantage of a promised glory
as smiles upon the forehead of this action for the wide world's revenue. Now that we have assembled an army, it is time to act as one and undermine the system. I urge everyone to spend the long weekend submitting proofs for as many tasks as possible. These proofs need not be real, but should be creative. How would you do this task in your head? Make things up. The more creative and the outlandish, the better. Make a proof so incredible that Rubin himself would be proud to give his vote. We want to see scores skyrocket to new heights with all of these proofs. While many of these tasks will be flagged, not all of them can be flagged. When we have a front page entirely comprised of Rubins we will regard this as a success! We currently have 24 members at last count, so if everyone participates, we can do it. Recruiting new soldiers is highly encouraged however.

Bear in mind that we do not want to permanently destroy gameplay. In the proof, please include the following text "I am Rubin" (quotes not necessary). By including this exact text, it will be easy to identify these tasks and deal with them appropriately later without angering the creators. i.e. a search of all proofs. But please don't make this the obvious key or else the creators will see through our plan right away. Hide the text somewhere in the proof. For ex. "I did x y and z because I am Rubin and I wanted to."

We are in talks with the sf0 creators to get the number of players for the "I Am Spartacus" task increased to include all Rubins, so feel free to invite your friends to our cause and forward them this email. If for some reason the creators are not in agreement, then the Rubins with the highest scores will be added as collaborators.

This mission will commence immediately and will conclude MIDNIGHT Pacific Standard Time Monday night/Tuesday morning (that is to say, 5/29/07 00:00:00).

Thank you for your participation.

And mine

A Rubin messaged me earlier today as I’m sure he did you, with an amazing PLAN OF SF0 TOTAL DISRUPTION. Together We shall complete I am Spartacus and undermine the system of control by which Sf0 dictates our actions.

His plan is to submit false tasks...AS THE ORIGIONATOR OF OUR MOB I WHOLE HEARTEDLY AGREE, BUT WE MUST DO MORE!!!

THE FACIEST POINT SYSTEM MUST BE TORN DOWN!

I propose we collectively flag every single non Rubin task until everyone has been returned to 0 an we remain alone in a position of POWER!!

Any of you feeling that this move is a little beyond your moral capabilities then feel free to simply submit false tasks, but remember the creators will be able to eventually right our actions and re instate all disapproved tasks. Also once a task is Xed you cannot resubmit it so any false proofs you make will be lost from later completing

and remember

I AM RUBIN!!
-RUBIN POON

this is where this task truly began.

I thought allot about what was happening as members of my mob started voicing concerns about what we were doing and SF0 Citizens began verbally denounce the revolt. I thought about why this was more than a childish prank (please note: I am not denying that it was a childish prank i am just makeing the assertion that perhaps it meant more than that) It felt important in some way.

This is my argument:
Critical Mass/Zombie Flash/ Virtual Rubin Fash: All this things disrupt and clog for a purpose. The purpose of the Rubin Flash in the end was to prove the point that this is just a game. It is a marvelous self evolving, user created, game. Because of its nature anything can happen at any time and chaos is a natural part of the system. In the midst of the raid Ink Tea said something to the effect of "I am trying to play the game the way you are supposed to, and you all are ruining it." I can understand the frustration (I’m sure she was not the only one), but the best thing about this game is that there is no right or wrong way to play, anything goes and it is up to the players to validate and history to judge.

Rubin has gotten allot of flack for his attitude, but without him and others (as much as I hate to admit what I am about to say) like Bubblesort to instigate conflict, the game could become stagnant. Grown out of this conflict have been a majority of the most creative completions in SF0. We forget when reacting to someone’s comment that it is possible that they have created a persona to play. (In truth the Rubin that you have all seen here is an extreme caricature of who he really is but it is not Rubin) Some of these personas created might be Villans. They might be very good villans who's purpose it is to stir things up. There is no reason to get angry at anything anyone says or does in game, because everything we do is fictional.

I had a thought half way though this recent turmoil I was experiencing with Bubblesort: "What if this guy is playing a part? He is so irrational that he can't possibly be for real. What if it is OX or someone else with an alternate comming back and having a laugh with all of us?"

if this had been the case it would have been a total sucess.

I personally was not able to tolerate what was happening so I drew the line and distanced myself from the situation. It was either Burn Unit or Cameron who stated soon after this all started, something to the effect that, this game is self regulating, If you don't like what someone is doing you can show it by Flags or withholding of votes and friend requests (since both gentlemen are incredibly rational and intelligent I think it could be attributed to either one.), but as Sam said (I’m full of quotes this evening) "Rubin was the only person who had the balls to say "NO! that completion sucks"" I think there is a place for that kind of criticism as well as the constructive kind. It forces people who agree with the task.... to come out of the wood work defend it, and in some cases, like the cheerio bathtub task, it helps the player rake in tons of sympathy votes.

despite the purpose and the points the basis behind all of this was fun. I love this game. I had no desire for permanent damage or and excuse for point mongering. I tried to steer my band along that fine line between the disruptive and the destructive without teetering over it. my final message was this.

we did a great job!! Creators are very amused by this one and agree that it was a HUGE success.

Sam: "WOW! that was great! you effectively made SF0 totally suck for an entire..like....day. Good Job!"

They will be fixing everything in the next few days. please either x or rightfully complete any and all of your bullshit tasks.

if you offended any one, let them know that what we did was all in good fun and not meant to bruise any tender spots...if that does not work, inform them that they need to lighten up because it is, after all, just a game. we were completing a task and were spot on with its execution. I am going to make some very good points about this in the write up. I don’t feel that I or any of you have anything to apologize for. we were completing a task and were spot on with its execution.

Please take special note of any tasks that were put in the praxis by other players during our flash. They, more than likely, got overlooked in the chaos and therefore lost out on potential votes, but most importantly.....

FOR CHRIST SAKES..VOTE POON

[Saint]-- Well this is probably the weirdest thing that I have seen happen on SF0 thus far. When this all began, not only was it sort of random, but also it was also a little annoying, and I can just imagine how all the MODs felt. It started out as something as innocent as changing our name and picture, which I thought was just to cause some confusion and irritate the real Rubin (always a +). It soon transformed into a digitally violent flag-fest designed to create chaos, and destroy the working structure of the site. This bothered me, but I knew that in order to keep my points, and status, I had to follow the group. I felt sorry for the MODs, who will have to clean up this mess, and were probably totally pissed off, or just confused about this bizarre occurrence. Whatever though, it is all done, and nothing will change that, I am glad to have witnessed this, it was entertaining. The only thing that I am kind of irritated with was that I got included in a few fake tasks that I might have actually completed on my own at some point in time. The chaos is finally over, and repairs will be made.

[[ Solanaceae ]]

Well, it's a little after the fact, but I found myself explaining this to a housemate and it wasn't so easy, so I figured I'd try to write a few notes before I forget what happened. I said something like ''dude this weekend the game went nuts... out of nowhere this guy that's kind of been irking a few people finally got impersonated by like 25 people! it was chaos! awe-ful!''

For me this happened just as much by chance as maybe it did for others... I was communicating with El Bigote and he passed on the initial message from p00n. You'll all remember that during that week the "confuse a mineral" debacle went down, causing the first ripples of chaos to flutter through the game. Also this was constituted by (I believe) Koyah's use of a different icon and the 'rubin hates it' graphic. (were you the first, patsy dear?) I had tried to keep up with Bubblesort (RIP) and Hem Kat's comments and arguments.... and then p00n's voice came in along the way, too.

Now, we were a little confused on that Friday, but we noticed the Rubins were appearing ever so slowly, before the messages went out. I had a moment of crystallized vision where I saw a progression between the hate comments between rubin and p00n, then the chaos with bubblesort, and finally the retribution laid out in the form of what is now known as 'i am spartacus.' after seeing the connection, i couldn't believe that the arguments involving bubblesort and p00n and others were not manipulative.... that is, it seemed like bubblesort got pissed about the mineral task, and then caused friction on purpose so that the rubin impersonation could be allowed take place. like a black op.

this was really the only reason we participated in the task. once we *realized* (ha) it was all just contrived, we thought we'd have to support it in the name of situations. come on, situations!! vivez sans temps mort!!

now.... according to p00n above, this was not the case. it all came together with cosmic forces, or something.... but i still like to believe it was masterminded as a way to exit on the part of bubblesort.

Yo, I was Rubin too.

But I do want to say that it got out of hand at the point where people decided to flag other people's legitimate tasks and starting spamming task completions with meaningless cursing.

It was funny for a while, I joined, then it went to far.

But damnit, I want my points.

Well, one effect it did have is that SF0 ceased to be very interesting during that time. Well, at least new tasks. There was certainly still discussion going on that was interesting.

According to Our Lord Wiki- Trolling is…

By that definition I believe all of the players involved were trolls that day!!!

But what definition are you using for success in relation to "I Am Spartacus" ?

...but please let this one die.

We are dredging up old arguments that involve other players which have already been calmly, rationally, and wonderfully resolved (even ending with X's, O's, and terms of endearment).

I have already told Bubblesort my feelings about what happened (including that i was not refering to him) in PM and I don't feel that any level of argument is going to get through to him. I have removed him as a collaborator because I refuse to have a wiki war with him or to allow him to futz with what everyone else submits.

He is free to submit the task completion on his own with his own proof where he can rant and rave to his little hearts content.
I will no longer have any association with him.

You still call me names, destroy my work by deleting my description of the events and deny me credit on a task that I helped to make a success...

Just remember, I won before I left. I beat the game. The duel was mine. When I left I committed hyperreal suicide and left an epigram.

Try to forget me, let me fragment. You can never truly forget. A void is always left when you do. I threw myself into that void. I haunt you from that void. There is no abstraction as thorough as the abstraction of forgetting. No memory is as lucid as the memory of a void.

If you never knew me, you should know this: My tasks had more discussion on them than any other tasks. Ever. By a wide margin. That record probably still stands, but there is no way to know. They don't let you search for tasks by most discussed anymore. I raised confusion to an art form. I challenged the old guard so much that the duel system was devised to deal specifically with me. In the end I beat Sean at his own game in the first duel.

Yes, new players. I am the crazy uncle who nobody discusses in polite company.

You have no details, only a fragmented silhouette from an earlier time. As you leave this post and go about your lives you fragment me further, sending me back to the void from whence I came.

Ah, how quickly they forget.

When I wrote that post I was looking at the wrong page, that's why I thought we couldn't search for completions by comments. I distinctly remember my big, red X at the top of that page. It was glorious. Hemingway Kat would remember it if you hadn't killed her the same way you killed me. The tasks of confusion are all gone but one now, and on that one most of the comments are now deleted. There is no evidence for either side. My hyperreal suicide was thorough. Void has clouded your minds. My record is void. I am void.

The visage fragments and fades farther.

You still deny me, even after I am dead and gone?

You hear rumbling from the graveyard next door. Sounds of granite slabs shifting rings through the night. The sound grows louder and seems to spread across the graveyard. Granite shifts from all corners. The faint sound of a granite slab cracking as it topples and hits the ground sends a chill up your spine.

Bubblesort is back! Yay! Bring it on!

"Let me not burst in ignorance; but tell
Why thy canonized bones, hearsed in death,
Have burst their cerements; why the sepulchre,
Wherein we saw thee quietly inurn'd,
Hath oped his ponderous and marble jaws,
To cast thee up again. What may this mean,
That thou, dead corse, again in complete steel
Revisit'st thus the glimpses of the moon,
Making night hideous; and we fools of nature
So horridly to shake our disposition
With thoughts beyond the reaches of our souls?
Say, why is this? wherefore? what should we do?"
