Painted Garbage by Amby D, Dela Dejavoo
July 23rd, 2010 11:03 AM
Dela Dejavoo and Amby started this task in the fall of 2008. It was one of their first dates and very magical in the way that first dates can be. Their first task, of course, was to acquire paint, so they headed out to a hardware store and picked out the prettiest, brightest color they could find. They chose a beautiful light, bright blue. They knew they wanted to paint a lot of trash so they purchased a whole gallon of said paint.

Amby stuffed the gallon of paint in her trusty backpack and the girls hit the streets and alleyways looking for the perfect garbage to paint. Dela Dejavoo can sometimes be a bit of a perfectionist, or perhaps she just couldn't focus because she was too excited to be spending time with her crush. Whatever the reason, she just couldn't settle on a spot despite the ridiculous amount of garbage everywhere.
Here is a mostly accurate map of the route they took.

Eventually they chose to stop at the beach to collect their thoughts.

And came to the conclusion that it was best to put off painting garbage for the evening and make out instead.
Fast forward to 22 months later. The gallon of paint has been sitting in Dela Dejavoo's and Amby's shared apartment untouched, with the exception of that one day Amby opened it up and got a little creative. Dela Dejavoo came home to find some blue rectangles painted above their bed.

But yes, other than that, the paint and brushes had sat unused, until today.
Amby poured the paint into two more portable and more easily accessible pickle jars while Dela gathered as many vials of sparkles as she could find. She wanted the trash to sparkle in the sunshine.

They then set out to find some street trash, and found a length of street running along the train tracks that was full of trash that could be transformed in to blue, sparkly goodness.

And they got to work. Now, it being the middle of the day in a rather high traffic place, right next to the train station, they were a little nervous. Technically they were pretty sure they weren't doing anything illegal. But in a city where graffiti is such a problem that it is illegal to sell spray paint within the city limits, two girls with huge jars full of paint kneeling with brushes next to the train tracks is likely to be frowned upon.
But this did not stop them.

They painted a lot of garbage and covered it with sparkles as they moved down the length of the street.

It was very messy.

We got a few comments from folks as they walked by us while we painted, but the best one was from a man who seemed to live or work nearby. He walked by as we were finishing up and said, "Hell. Heh. Gonna have to get a broom."
"Well, we've at least made it pretty," Amby stated.
"Yes you did. Can't hardly miss it now, can you. Heh," said the guy.
