Night Photography by lara black
November 20th, 2007 12:27 AM / Location: 37.780629,-122.3905i was listening to margo guryan in my headphones and suddenly the song "take a picture" came on. honestly, i had never once considered completing this task, as i am without question the most inept photographer of all time, but it seemed like a command performance. i only had my camera phone with me, but i assure you, i wouldn't have been able to do any better with a real camera anyway.
here are some things i saw between work and bart and bart and home. they are in chronological order. and also, here's the margo guryan song, for ambiance.
take a picture
this is a very nice margo guryan song which told me in no uncertain terms that i was to complete this task.
hard core "art"

this is some art gallery near where i work. seems like someone was commenting on the quality of the art inside by leaving this piece of trash on the window sill. or maybe they just needed a place to set their apple core...
mystical branches

most of the branches were normal, but these ones were glowing unnaturally from within. i suspect that their roots snake down into an underground cavern full of crystals that pollute the ground water with magic.
dan flavin installation on 2nd street

just kidding. but it did remind me of his work at the chinati foundation.
idea chute?

what are these things for anyway? i think maybe there's a chute inside the building where people put their good ideas, and then at night someone comes by and harvests them from these things. see how the top one is open? hmmm.
take a picture

this seemed in keeping with the spirit of the song. i dunno. i'm kind of a romantic one, as certain people have pointed out...
make believe awning

i love this. they wanted an awning, but the curved facade of the building made it impractical, so they just painted one on! i wish it was a better picture. it really doesn't do the idea justice.
come inside

is this not appealing? i really wished i could go into this kitchen for a cup of hot chocolate. probably though i'm just lucky i didn't get caught peering in the window at 10pm.
balmy seas

the left bit of sidewalk is pained this really nice aqua color. it's very similar to the color i painted my bedroom, which is called "balmy seas." i suppose you cant really tell in this picture though...
i live in a "transitional neighborhood"

i have absolutely no idea why there are giant loops of barbed wire on top of this concrete wall which doesn't contain anything and is adjacent to the car wash on my block. maybe it's just supposed to look tough?
wtf. seriously.

this lone wolf shoe was sitting on the vacuum machine at the car wash down the block from my house. i don't know.
evil utility power

check out this evil robot that lives on shaftner street. it looked really threatening, but i came right up and took a picture of it and it didn't do shit.
damn!

to my naked eye they were just these charming wrought iron gas lamps, but my cheap camera phone turned them into horrifying apocalyptic fireballs!
hard core "art"

this is some art gallery near where i work. seemingly, someone has commended on the value of the "art" inside by placing this piece of trash on the window sill. or possibly they just needed a place to rest their apple core.

You get my vote primarily for the apocalyptic fireballs.
You are a rockin' photographer. You have a great eye.
the orb child has a name.... it is 111.
more about the orb child, 111, please.
The song was exactly long enough for me to look and and read all the photos/captions. And I smiled the whole way through.
Maybe that orb-exhaling kid has been eating the mystical branches!
Down with evil robots that don't deliver!
