Rediscover Non-Sexual Touch by Burn Unit, Henry

October 9th, 2007 10:37 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Rediscover non-sexual touch.

Over the last three weeks Henry and Burn Unit spent a lot of time together experiencing the enormous diversity of non-sexual touch in the setting of a relationship between parent and child. So much touching is necessary, even leaving out the big obvious touching that occurs between mother and child during feeding.

We did pay attention to group orientation on this as well:
Henry
Henry's a natural Biome and touch is a major factor in his environment--it's necessary, but it's also good for him. He responds to it, understands his world better through it, and thrives on touch.

Burn Unit
We shot quite a lot of footage, maybe two-and-a-half hours worth over that time? That much all at once would be a heavy load to review--an order of magnitude longer than any of those Melville-esque text proofs I've written! I edited the footage into a movie called Studies in Rediscovery: 21 Short Films About Non-Sexual Touch. Some of the segments are titled, many cuts are left untitled. It's not all shots of a baby crying, and nor is it all glurge. There are some amazing discoveries in there--the tiniest gestures of connection that made me feel like crying when I was editing them. There's a couple moments that are funny--beyond just the laughing baby there's the unavoidable look of concern/exhaustion on my face as I deal again with some difficult wailing that "exceeds our fuss budget" as we like to say. That said, the full length movie is 18 minutes.

I guess we decided to kind of go epic on this one.

If only all home movies were produced by Burn Unit. . .

There are some great interactions in "many small variations at once," and "three minutes of keeping calm" is brilliant, if a bit of a digression. Nicely done.

ps. Can an infant really claim to be rediscovering anything?

Henry worked so seriously hard on this one: the voluntary gesture of the fingers curling down to find an already familiar kind of touch. And the surprise upon the unexpected touch of his own hand by his cheek (where did that came from?).
(Epic wardrobe too! The whale outfit, and just the right hue of purple in the first one.)
