Funeral of Scyld Scefing by cody

November 15th, 2010 3:28 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Gather up a number of things befitting the memory of someone or something you have lost and send them forth, in a dignified fashion, to an unknown destination.

I'm technically an adult now, so I'm making a change or two. The thing I'm saying goodbye to has always been part of me, but I've finally grown out of it.

I think it's time to give the old me a proper burial.

The thought of burning something is final for me. Campsites are home, and firesides are my living rooms. So a funeral by fire seemed appropriate. I don't know where an idea goes when you burn it. I guess as the paper containing it burns, it's free to go somewhere else. So I'm labeling the envelope 'Somewhere Else' and sending it on its way.

- smaller

all wrapped up and ready to go

all wrapped up and ready to go

she put pen to paper and wrote a letter to the girl she used to be.

on the chopping block.

on the chopping block.

she went out, found a fine place for a funeral.

after a few rough starts and stops

after a few rough starts and stops

the letter finally caught fire, to her relief. the wind made her think that maybe this wouldn't work, and she wouldn't be able to let cm-that-was go.

burn baby burn.

burn baby burn.

finally the thing lit up like a candle. she did a dance around it.

-

-

she watched the marker blacken into nothing, saw the paper inside begin to catch.

-

-

and the flames ate away at the goodbye letter like greedy monsters, taking away the pressure she'd been feeling for years and throwing it to the wind, finally forgotten.

i love the texture.

i love the texture.

everything finally crumbled to ashes. she wanted to run her fingers through it, but the memories and heat were still so fresh that she knew it would burn.

and then it was over.

and then it was over.

a few words were still visible beneath the ruins. "i am me. i am okay." and she was.
