Mihi by cody

INSTRUCTIONS: In Maori culture, when you formally introduce yourself in a meeting house it is called a "Mihi". You tell people your canoe, tribe, sub-tribe and family, but you ALSO identify specific geological features to which you "belong". For example, "your" lake, mountain, river, forest etc.

Chose at least three geographical features that you consider "yours". Document them.

I live a lot of places. I don't mean to say that I INHABIT a lot of places, just that I call them home. It's like when you read a book on vacation- your mind remembers where you read it and all of a sudden every time you crack open your copy of The Traveler you can smell the tomatoes in your aunt's kitchen and the steel stench coming off the cars in the forest behind her house. It's ingrained in your memory. Maybe it's the awkward synesthesia thing, but this is how my brain works.

Maybe a better way to put this would be to say that home is mutable for me. My home is wherever I am.

So this Mihi thing- I get it. We're all just one big tribe. The point of life isn't to be solitary. No way. We're supposed to build connections, because that's what makes us happy on an evolutionary level. We compare ourselves to everyone else and somehow everything works out for the best and we make friends.

And I digress.

This is my family.

The're an extremely specific kind of strange. They've all definitely helped shape the kind of person I am now. My parents are cool. We all get along. We camp. We hike. We just have fun.

This is my tribe.

We all fit together like a crazy big puzzle. It's kind of insane.

This is my sub-tribe.

Hello, science fiction double feature.

These are the canoes.

main_dsc059097003.jpg So. I would be lying if I called it environmentally friendly, which is usually what I try to go for. However, the thing's been running for somewhere along the lines of eight years. At least. Past history is a little sketchy. The a/c's a little weak, the backseat shifts a little, and two doors don't open. But the brakes work (now)!

The other canoes are significantly smaller. And slightly less effective, but better for tasking.

This is my lake.

main_backpacking03396983.jpgWelcome home.
