March 8th, 2008 2:01 PMVert3x is a simple yet amusing game of trickery, cunning, and aggression. You must be thinking steps ahead of your opponent, else you'll end up on the losing side swiftly!
Vert3x: preparing the paper
In Vert3x you play on a board of Triangles. The size of the board is up to you! The longer, and more challenging a game you want, the bigger board you play on. The shape of the board is also up to you! Once you've drawn your board, you need to choose a start position, you could choose anywhere or start opposite sides, it's up to you! When that's done, you're ready to go!
Vert3x: Playing the game
There are many additions on Vert3x, and one of the attractions is that you can think up your own variations and rules, but here we've listed the basics.
Vert3x: Rules: Aim
The aim of Vert3x is to get as many points as possible by the end of the game. Simple.
Vert3x: Rules: Gameplay
In the game of Vert3x, players take turns in putting down lines. They must place lines that touch their existing lines at least once. Players may not cross other players lines, but they can touch them. You can cross your own lines.
Vert3x: Rules: Scoring
The basic scoring in Vert3x comes from simple things. Every line you place down, earns you one point! So far so good.
The other way to earn score is to draw triangles with your lines. Once you complete a triangle you receive points based on how large it is. Ie, the smallest triangle you can create is 3 points. For larger triangles, you receive points based on how many lines its outline is made of.
Vert3x: Variations
There are many variations on Vert3x, and half the fun is thinking up your own! Here's a few to start you off.
Multiplier bonuses for larger and larger triangles.
Multiple lines
Extra bonuses for other shapes
Mink: I've played a game where you get points for boxing in someone else's line, could incorporate this maybe.
Ways to 'Overrule' other players lines
Ways to steal points
Bonuses for creating triangles covering other triangles.

Rules of our version here:
In Vert3x (Trianguliche version) you play on a board of triangles.
The standard board (for a fast game with two players) is a 2x2 board made by four windows (each one made of four "windowpanes"), divided in triangles by an X.
Players take turns tracing down lines on the triangle grid: each player traces lines of a different color.
The aim is to draw triangles of your own color: the more and the bigger the better. And, of course, at the same time, to prevent the other player from drawing triangles of his/her own color, by blocking vertexes with your color. Only triangles with three sides of the same color count for the score.
The scoring in Vert3x (Trianguliche version) comes from the number of triangles drawn.
Individual triangles (also called 1x triangles) are worth 1 point.
2x-triangles (made by two individual triangles) are worth 2 points, 4x-triangles are worth 3 points, 8x-triangles are worth 4 points and so on.
You can play Vert3x (Triaguliche version) on a larger board (i.e., substitute the 2x2 board by a 3x3, 4x4, 5x5, etc) and it can also be played with more players, as long as there are different colors for each one. .
See captions in the "larger" pictures for the details of our game in a most public surface: the town square (the plaza).

GYØ

Tom, Daryl, Adam and Askew met up on top of the mulit-storey to play a large scale game of Vert3x (GYØ Rules), Ben was supposed to be there but a communication breakdown meant he didn't arrive in time.
Vert3x: GYØ Rules
In GYØ Rules Vert3x, you play on a large dotted square board. This can be any size, we went for 15x15.
Players take turns placing their respective colour lines down on the board. Lines may only go from dot to dot, and may go horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Lines may only span between 2 rows/coloumns. The aim is to draw triangles, thus scoring points. Players do not get an extra turn after completing a triangle.
The scoring in GYØ rules Vert3x is as follows. A triangle made up of 3 small lines, ie: the smallest triangle possible, is a triangluar unit. One triangular unit is worth 1 point. Triangles made up of more than one triangular unit are scored as 1 point per unit contained within them. Units previously claimed by other players do not count toward the score. Once a large scale triangle is 'scored' lines may not be placed inside it to split it up.
For example:

Our game

We wanted somewhere peacfull, big and awesome. Where better than the top of a multistorey carpark undergoing building work?
We got a few odd looks from builders, but we were mostly ignored. Some skaters came up and had a look, but left quickly.
After a slow start whilst everyone learnt, and settled on our version of the rules, Tom was ahead after getting two larger triangles. Then Askew and Adam pulled ahead with a string of larger triangles. Daryl was losing badly.
About 20 minutes later, Askew was winning and Daryl was annoyed. Then Daryl scored a 35pt mega triangle, which we were not happy about.

Final scores:

Daryl: 71
Tom: 61
Askew: 66
Adam: 61
So there you have it, Vert3x. Give it a try next time you're bored and all you have to hand is a pen and some paper.
Note: Haberley, Cpt. Dorothy, Ben, Leigh, Emma - If you have any proof, send it to us!
Mink and Charlie

Mink and Charlie playtested Vert3x in a pub, trying out different variations to see what would be the most fun to play.
Mink and Charlie

Then we played it in Trafalgar Square - the cultural centre of London. That's Nelson's column in the background, and you can just see the top of the Millennium Wheel peeping up in the centre.
Mink and Charlie

As it happens, we weren't the only people messing around with chalk in Trafalgar Square that day. These guys put our ugly little triangles to shame...
Vert3x in paper

Susy Derkins devised the standard grid and scoring for this particular version of Vert3x: squares are 1x triangles (1 point), stars are 2x triangles (two points). 2x triangles (that is, double-triangles) if divided in the middle, also count as two 1x triangles, of course. It is also possible to trace 4x triangles (3 points) and 8x triangles (4 points).
Downtown plaza is an inmense Vert3x grid

The floor is all triangles, begging for chalk in two different colors.
Vert3x is "Trianguliche" is Spanish

We decided to translate our version of Vert3x to Spanish as "Trianguliche". Because the game is reminiscent of Timbiriche, but is doesn´t uses squares. Beside this sign we (Susy Derkins and Chalk Girl) placed another sign that read "¿Quieres jugar?" (Do you want to play?). There were people around and we left our chalk there after we finished.
Chalk Girl starts the game

The rule of "youngest player starts" applies here. Notice that every vertex is about 70 cm long. So the board is too large for us to get it all in the picture. I guess we could have climbed a tree with the camera, but we didn´t.
From plaza sweeper to game watcher

This man´s work is to sweep the plaza. He arrived when we went about half-through with out Trianguliche game. We were worried he would get mad at us for messing up the floor with chalk but he was perfectly cool about it ("if they ask me, I didn´t see nothing, I like the fun myself"), listened to our explanations of how the game was, sat down and watched till the end and said "well, I need to get going now, but congratulations and good luck with your event".
Final score: Chalk Girl 16, Susy Derkins 15

Chalk Girl, who played blue chalk, got herself a 4x triangle, which gave her the victory. The girl in the back followed the entire game and later asked us for yellow chalk and red chalk.
sf0 on a public surface: the sidewalk

Yeah, not part of the task, and we don´t have "pavement is paper" anymore. This one is not 100% reversible, like our Vert3x was: we even took a little brush to the site and cleaned it afterwards. SFØ is there to stay, though. It has been there five months already...

It's quite nice up here, I might rent a parking space one day and sit up here with a book in a deckchair...

Team Shplank? Really?
Meh.
It certainly deserves more votes though.
I'm with Ben. It's a good completion, but far from a shplank, IMHO.
This was an awsome completion and deserves more votes. Wish our attempt at this task hadn't failed so miserably.
What happened? A case of "why does it always rain on me"?
And why not give it another go?
This task is so much fun to complete.
What happened? A case of "why does it always rain on me"?
Nah, more a case of "why do we get reprimanded by security guards and almost taken to the police?"
D=
Ah, a problem we face quite often. Infact I think it was when we were doing this that we got hastled by shopping centre security about why we needed to go to the roof. Or at least Ben did.
Probably saw us on CCTV too.
Yeah we also tried escape from the camera too. That almost ended badly because we ran through a shopping centre and the guards shouted at us to come back, we didn't but found out later that they were all on the lookout for us. It was a bad day really but it wont stop us from trying again and making it better.
"It was a bad day really"
I'm sorry, what?
A fairly productive day if you ask me!
But yeah, EFTCII and Public Surface completions upcoming (if we don't get arrested)!
Ok, not a bad day due to clues but in the whole get in trouble with authorities it was a bad day.
I like it!
