The Public Easel by Tøm, GYØ Ben, GYØ Daryl, GYØ Kieran!

June 16th, 2007 11:24 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Create a public easel, or anything that art could be applied to (e.g. a large square of cardboard), and place it in a public place. Encourage passersby to add some artwork to it by whatever means that you provide. Document its evolution as a public work of art.

Great Yarmouth Public Easel

It was a rainy day, having just completed the rain dance task (and having it work!), and we took shelter from the rain under Britannia Pier. We were not the only people to have this brainwave, so our time under shelter proved well spent, getting our first 6 or 7 artists, including an entire family who seemed intrested in the game. Several small doodles were added, and an unsure person just added a circle. It was under Britannia Pier that we got our most artistic addition of the day, coming from a man selling hotdogs.

Once the rain had cleared up we headed off down the main 'tourist' street, Regent Road. Brandishing our easel and our sign inviting others to 'draw on me', we got a few people to add to the 'canvas' but most people were eager to get home because of the rain.

We were not put off though, and we continued up to the Great Yarmouth market, where market stall owners provided much of the piece, including the dragon to the right of it from Taz from Hostile-Records (which they decided to advertise on our easel).

Once we had sucked the market dry of artistic urge, we made our way back down Regent Road. Getting a few doodles from bored passers by, we hit a few of the more interesting shops. We made our way into 'Dead Good' where we recieved our first dose of typical Great Yarmouth, having to censor much of it. However one of the more abstract employees taped a piece from a coat hanger to it.

We then moved off into 'Tickles', Great Yarmouth's joke shop. It was here we had a crude depiction of a phallus added, which was made worse with eyes by Daryl.

We then headed back into the market square, and stood outside Argos. Daryl went inside to buy new camera batteries, and the rest of us stood outside attempting to get more additions. We got a few, however it seemed Great Yarmouth had run out of people with patience for a group of teens thrusting cardboard in thier faces.

It was here where we met George, but seeing as we had just about finished, he didn't do much.

All in all, it looks as if Great Yarmouth has little artistic talent, but it was an enjoyable task.

All this, in the space of an hour and a half.
