Urban Exploration 1 - Tom and Adam
Lime Quay Grain Mill

Really with this kind of task I've always thought it was best to let the photos do the talking but I thought I would give you a bit of background to go with them.

For as long as I can remember there has always been an abandoned grain plant opposite the railway station on Lime Kiln Walk in Yarmouth and for an equally long ammount of time I wanted to investigate. I was browsing Flickr when I came across some photos of it and enquired as to how to get in. I got the instructions and went on a rekkie to see if it was still possible. It was. I arranged with Tom to meet and look further.

We entered through a small cut in the chain-link fencing and we were both pretty astounded by what we found. It was very odd, as if it had been left in a hurry. The electrical room still had many components in place and signs still up. The working areas looked as if they hadn't been made safe at all and the office was still full of office things. Including some coffee, seats, telephones, a telex machine, instruction manuals and all the rest.

Some of the eeriest parts about the whole task were just how still everything was. The electrical switches still said on and the plants seemed to slowly crack up through the pavement to invade what was left. Obviously people had been there before us, there were some alcohol cans around, a little bit of grafitti and somehow a fire had broken out in one section and there were a number of gas canisters in the area which were thrown onto it.

I think I can say we were both very happy to have seen it before it is demolished and turned into generic riverside flats.

Anyway, like I said, the pictures are good so here are some of my favourites and the rest are at the bottom.

Just after completing the task and our final photo on-site.

A dot-matrix printer with some text left in it reading "Power interuption" "Automatic cycle" "Power interuption"

I did a bit of research (Googled) the company, they still own a grain mill in South Norfolk.

Jesus. Just heard that Tom got banned from his PC for two weeks for this completion. Kudos for the dedication Tom. His mum is going to hate me.

Two weeks, really! Well if you're going to get grounded for tasking this is not a bad note to go out on.

Ah well we shall see. He has computer access at school so he might post a rebuttal to all this tomorrow.

Awesome. I always think exploration tasks are the most fun and creepy. Worth getting banned over. Really good pictures too.

Sadly upon returning to Great Yarmouth I found this place torn down and gone.

Always thought I'd go back and take more photos one day.
