Find Roof Access by Tøm, Adam, GYØ Daryl, GYØ Ben

February 13th, 2008 7:35 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Find roof access.

This task was fun to complete, but it's pretty hard to do in Yarmouth.

Roof 1 - Multi-Storey - Tom and Adam
This is the first 'roof' we found access too. It was more of a trip to get some good views than to complete this task, but we thought it might add some good photos. It also had the added bonus of being closed off for building work, making finding access slightly harder.

Roof 1 - Multi-Storey - Tom and Daryl
Me and Daryl returned the next week hoping to get some more pictures. It also led to the discovery of access to roof 2.

Roof 1 - Multi-Storey - Tom and Daryl
Tom and Daryl returned to this roof to complete their Fun with Food task.

Roof 2 - Market Gates Shopping Centre - Tom and Daryl
Whilst visiting the multi-storey carpark for the first time, Me and Daryl discovered a way to get onto the roof of the actual Shopping centre. Through the disabled carpark, and over a wall led us onto the roof somewhere above card warehouse.

Roof 2 - Market Gates Shopping Centre - Tom, Daryl, Adam and Ben
We returned on the weekend, bringing Adam and Ben with us. It's much lighter at this time, and we ventured further onto the roof.

Roof 3 - Leisureland Arcade - Tom, Daryl, Adam and Ben
This roof was slightly less illegal than roof 2. Under the guise of Art students, we went inside Leisureland and asked if there was any way for us to get onto their roof to take photos and make sketches. The guy we spoke to said that the builders has blocked up their hatch, and we'd have to come back next week. We did, they hadn't finished yet. Two weeks later we returned and were shown the way onto the roof, up a spiral staircase into the loft and out a window. This was the most interesting roof of all 3 as it looks right out over the seafront. It's also an odd shaped building, like a U with 2 'barn-roof-esque' curves, one on each side. We started documenting whilst Ben talked art and started sketching to keep up the pretence.

Roof 4 - Marina Centre - Failure
We tried the same trick on the people at the Marina Centre, and whilst we were promised access, when we showed up they spouted various health and safety codes at us and refused. We'll keep at them because there'll be some brilliant views over the beach from the roof, but it doesn't look likely.

This is the very top of the multi-storey carpark. It may sound like an easy completion, but the access to the top has been blocked off for building work at the moment, so it's harder than it sounds. Still easy though.

This is the first day we came to this roof. This is our main shopping centre, and it contains the official best place in Yarmouth, the Lighthouse café.

I just realized that I probably know more about some town in England that I've never even been too than I do about some places that I have been too.

Not sure how I feel about that.

You should come to Great Yarmouth. Then you'll know alot about a town you've visited.

Im sitting in GY0 Tom's living room as we just got back from doing a task we'll submit later today.

Watching countdown.

GYØ artsy roof guerilla, you guys are the very best.

If roof # 3 was this exciting to read I can´t imagine how did it feel being here. And the revolutionary act of asking nicely, getting people so confused that they end up saying yes!

I am going to find out who to write in order to propose you´d be given the keys of GY: a big bunch of people overseas wants to visit the place now...

The spiral staircase alone was enough to get my vote.

Spent part of the day looking at Great Yarmouth areas of interest (building a mock powerpoint presentation for work on "The strange trench digging behaviors of Great Britain's seaside youth" and looking for an appropriate sponsor... though I couldn't find a website or even a logo, I chose Louis Tussaud's House of Wax, mostly because of their recent press regarding their sale of several badly formed wax heads), so I'm feeling even more attuned to GY. Never been to England, but when I go GY's on the agenda, no matter what... and so's that staircase and roof!

Ah Louis Tussards is a legend. None of the models look like what they are supposed to. Saddam Hussein or Cliff Richard is probably the best.

Great Yarmouth is certainly worth a visit if you want to see the real England beyond all that London malarkee. You'll have to come and see GYZero. Charlie did and we had a barrel of laughs. And a barrel of Pizza Hut.

The raw timber of the roof arch is gorgeous.
I think I might have to visit this summer if I finally get to make my trip to Dunwich

Putting up false pretenses that weren't really false in regards to art without being pretentious.

I like it.
