One o'clock, saturday night fever, a firend of mine comes to pick me up.. Thin rain is dropping but intense atmospheric phenomena are beating the sky. Fire, light and thunders roll again and again. Looks the perfect night to go for some exploration into the belly of the ancient walls of Città Alta.

We park the car and prapare ourself, I've got my headlamp, camera? ok, other torch (with red lens)? ok. We start walking down the bicycle path. A lot of dogs are barking but is ok since the thunder is our friend, tonight.
We climb over a couple of fence, we cross a vaste and wet field and we reach the wall. We follow it to the dark entrance, time to time we are flashed by long and creepy lightning, and the livid sky turns violet.
http:
We climb a couple of slimy and dirty walls and we enter the Cannoniera of S. Agostino.
img1062102983.jpgimg1063102984.jpg
Now we are in the main room, puddles and sand everywhere but walkable.
img1064102985.jpg
At one end of the room there's a wall with an iron ladder, we climb it up to another small room, than again up a ledder to the main conduct.
img1065102987.jpgimg1067102988.jpg
we walk for a couple of hundreds of meters with a little fear, the noise is getting stronger and stronger and the rain is pumping inside the tunnel. This one is for the overflow, and could possibly be flooded, but looks pretty dry at the moment.
img1070102989.jpgimg1071102990.jpg
We spot a couple of exits, but we do not dare to find out where do they take.
img1076102993.jpg
At the end of the main conduct we stop in front of a fork. A pair of smaller tunnel, full of water, meet the main conduct and all the water falls into a third, lower, tunnel. I try to wal a bit the left one, the dryer, but after 10 meters there's a long pool, I cannot continue. The right one goes up and is slimy and wet, I do not feel very comfortable going there.
img1072102991.jpgimg1075102992.jpg
So we decide to go back and come another day, maybe a clear and dryer night.

But we hadn't enough. As we go back to the car, we feel so deeply connected with our territory, that we decide to take another chance. I know another way into the walls.
So we drive anothe kilometer and we park near another of the 4 entrance, Porta Garibaldi. We cross another field, we reach the wall and we walk till a small hole between the groun and the wall. We enter and we start crawling.
img1083102995.jpg
On our way (a long and exhausting way, alway on all four) we encounter a small fall, it's a well going up. After another 50 meters of ascension the tunnel starts to shrink and we are forced to creep on the belly.
img1086102996.jpg
Luckily pretty soon it enlarges again. Now it's rocky, no more bricks.
img1088102997.jpg
Later we come to a room, flthy and slimy room. A rope is coming down from a hole in the upper part of the wall, now that's an invitation. The way up is very difficult and dangerous so my friend decides to wait there.
img1089102998.jpg
After 70-90 meters the tunnel collapse into a pile of debris, the air is almost unbreathable. Before the stop, anyway, there's another tunnel, crossing mine. I drop into the hole to discover another long pipe full of smelly water.
img1091103000.jpg
I crawl a bit into one direction and the other just to find a couple of forks. Some going up and some down.
img1090102999.jpg
The air is really heavy and I start to fill a bit of dizziness. I'm going outta here.
On my way back to the main tunnel I fin what the rope is tide: an iron ladder, rusty and corroded. As soon as I touch the ladder it brakes down into powder! The rope now is tied to a small beam coming out from the wall. Now it's dangerous.
I climb up in the main tunnel, I walk back to the rope, I climb it down trying my best not to weigh entirely on the rope. This shitty place is really slippery!
Anyway I find my way down to the tunnel. We go back. After reaching the point where the floor stops to be rocky, we decide to turn off all lights and procede blind. The emotion is really strong, being into the earth without senses but the touch. In the beginning I slam into the ceiling and into the walls, than I find my physical mantra: move the left hand, move the right foot, move the right hand, move the left foot, rise the left hand, touch the wall, touch the ceiling, put down the left hand. Start again.
The noise of the small fall grows higher till I feel the water falling on my shoulder. Ok, we're almost out. Another couple of minutes and we reach the open sky. It's still raining but we feel like the lords of this land, now.

Vote for mapmaking, a great place to discover, and excellent narrative.
