R/C Fire by Charlie Fish

December 28th, 2007 5:48 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: Use a remote control to set something on fire.

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.

I concocted a plan to use a remote control to cause a chain reaction that would spark a fire. It used a DVD player, a candlestick, a sparky gizmo from a lighter, and a paper towel soaked in meths. The plan is illustrated below:

As you'll see from the first video at the bottom, the plan failed. And not for lack of persistence.

Eventually, the meths stopped smelling so strongly, which either meant it had evaporated or I was losing consciousness. Either way, time to devise a Plan B.

The second video at the bottom shows that this somewhat simpler method was a success. There's a lesson there, I'm sure...

Charlie Fish is on a nigh-impossible mission to complete every single pure-EquivalenZ task by the end of the era. Prior tasks:

- Keep Your Eyes Peeled
- Virtual Nation Building
- Lucid Dreaming 2: EquivalenZ
- Dodging
- Nintend0
- Correspond with a spammer
- Cellular Breakdown
- SFZero Text Updates
- Objectify a Subject
- Attachment Theory
- Bathe Electonics

- smaller

This picture shows where I got the sparky gizmo from. It's the black thing on the left that looks like a mini petrol pump. You press the button on top and a spark comes out of the wiry bit (which, when it is part of the lighter, ignites the flame). It is fun to give people tiny electric shocks with this gizmo.

I say keep working on plan A. It's got merit and it'll come through eventually. Maybe it needs a little adjustment somewhere along the chain.

Ah, Mr. Fish

Something I learned while doing the Damocles Coulage is that if you are using something to knock another thing over, it is critical that you have a mechanism for directing which way the second thing falls. I believe your first plan would require something that partially blocks and guides the candlestick so that it has to fall in a specific orientation. Nice persistence and a good use of a fall-back plan.

Very good question. Tasking is taking over my life. If I had more time I wouldn't be failing my mad EquivalenZ mission.

I will be a bit more relaxed about my tasking in the New Year, I think...

Thanks, Charlie.
I think I can speak for just about everyone in saying that your mad EquivalenZ mission has broken new ground and been a delight to watch. A great way to celebrate the end of an era!

I think I am going to set last years´ dry Christmas tree on fire using Sir Fish method, as a homage to his task genius.
