Mihi by Kattapa

INSTRUCTIONS: In Maori culture, when you formally introduce yourself in a meeting house it is called a "Mihi". You tell people your canoe, tribe, sub-tribe and family, but you ALSO identify specific geological features to which you "belong". For example, "your" lake, mountain, river, forest etc.

Chose at least three geographical features that you consider "yours". Document them.

I hadn't been there for 11 years. I hadn't seen her for a very long time.

I visit the Netherlands, were I'm originally from, two or three times a year (I now live in Berlin). However, including the time I still lived there, I had not taken the effort to go back to my origins, the place I was born, for eleven years. And the person I went to visit, I had not seen her for even longer.

So this time I visited the Netherlands, I also took the time to go back to the place where I spent my childhood.

It felt very surreal to be there, like walking around in a dream. Everything I saw triggered memories.

The first place I went to visit, after the railway station, was my old school.

Which is in the same street as my old house, the place I was born.

I also took a walk around town, before visiting the place were I spent most of my childhood.

In the park, climbing trees.

The first tree is the tree I climbed the most, the other one is my favorite tree. This tree has always had an air of mystery to me. As I was a child, probably because it was the tree that was climbable, but only if an older child helped you up. So it was the tree you had been in maybe once or twice. I still have a very vivid memory of sitting up in that tree. Of course, when I was there, I also had to do some tree climbing. So I did, and it was great.

In retrospect, a lot of my character is probably rooted in this childhood of climbing trees. More than anything, I like to be physically active and go on adventures.

The main reason however, to visit the place I was born, was to visit my old nanny, who still lives there. She was like an extra parent to me and I hadn't seen her for way too long.

It was really nice to see her again and catch up. We immediately reconnected and I had a great time. (For privacy reasons I won't post a picture of her.)
