Personal Diorama by miss understanding

November 27th, 2007 6:11 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Make a diorama depicting a significant personal event.

I thought about this task for awhile, considering if there were another "lighter" event to depict but finally settled on my first idea since so many other significant events have come out of it. When I was twelve years old, my dad and his girlfriend overdosed on heroin and died together in a motel room and my diorama is a representation of that. Since that day, it's been a long, interesting road.

To make my box o' childhood horror, I modge-podge-ed photocopies of all the news paper clippings I saved as well as a photo of the both of them. The handwritten caption says it was their first photograph taken together. The bed is an Altoids box, covered with fabric. The pillows are cotton balls strategically held in place by the glued fabric. The dresser was a complete surprise. I found it while picking up some paper towels at the dollar store. As for the needles, those were easy enough since I take a once-a-day injectable medication. Finally, for the finishing touch, I got some red paint and made some nice splatters. I get my odd sense of humor from him and believe he would have appreciated it.

Nice job. Well done for doing what felt like the right and best response.

Thank you. There have been so many times to cry, laugh and share my experience but none to diorama.

Very nicely done. The out-of-place blood spray does a wonderful job of adding emotion to what could otherwise be a much more lifeless piece.

I respect your bravery

In the context of this task, your player photo is even more disturbing...

Levitating-Thanks. I agree that the blood is what completed it. My aunt had to go to the motel room to claim any items that might be his. I recall overhearing that she was surprised at the amount of blood she saw.

Charlie-Thanks. I was thinking the same thing.

I often think that the dramatic and darker sides of art (or at least darker, more raw subject matter) is shied away from on SF0, with a definite preference for the light and comedic. I'm really glad to see someone else pulling from wherever inspiration lies (or... more aptly I think... rises up to throttle you). Wonderfully done.

Oh, and the live needles in the piece leave me twitchy.

I have the utmost respect for *anyone* who can broadcast a dark moment like that to a bunch of random players in an online game.

JTony-Thanks. I've often found that the pairing of the comedic with the dark is what makes those harsh moments much more bearable.

Peter-Thank you very much. Random fellow player or not, your words are appreciated and meaningful.

Ms. Vixen-Indeed. Thanks!

Wow thats really a brave thing to do. Extremely deep and admirable. You've got some kind of will to carry, and one hell of a way to bury your baggage.

Wow. Not only is this very artfully done, but it also has a very deep and painful meaning. I really do love the way this looks.

That is a very profound work of art.
And I'm incredibly sorry to hear what you had to live through as a child :-(

Thank you, to both you and Force.

I appreciate your kind words about my having to live through that--the date just recently passed, 15 years, and I continue to learn how to process my grief.
