Fruit Invasion by rongo rongo

November 5th, 2010 9:16 AM / Location: 41.557760,-72.83677

INSTRUCTIONS: Purchase/aquire many (a pound or two) small fruits (I've found kumquats to be very appropriate) which will not easily be squished. Slip them into strangers' pockets, tie them by threads from trees, or in some other manner help fruit invade the city.

Autumn is a great time for fruit invasion. And apples have a lot of pent-up aggression. (See the pictures for the full apple adventure.)

Apples grow on trees

I started by running around the city looking for fruit trees. I'd seen several crab apple trees, and at least one pear tree earlier this summer. But all of them were fruitless by the time I looked again. I also looked up this group that has started planting urban orchards for public harvest, and checked out one of the "urban wilds" where they've sited a couple fruit trees. But again, it was too late in the year. Luckily, I noticed an apple in the middle of the road, which led me to a very nice apple tree still loaded with fruit.

I think this must be a domesticated variety, because the apples were medium sized and red. But, like most domesticated apples trees which are not intensively sprayed or otherwise controlled, the fruits were full of worm holes.

Storming the castle

Storming the castle

A few weeks ago, I had visited Castle Craig at Hubbard Park. According to the plaque, this is the highest point within 25 miles of the coast between Maine and Florida.

Seizing the high ground

Seizing the high ground

When invading, seizing the high ground is often a good tactic. So I drove my apples to Connecticut and we climbed up the stairs to the castle. (I was en route to a meeting...I did not drive three hours just to deliver fruity invaders.)

On a clear day, they say you can see Long Island Sound and the Berkshires from here.

Other visitors to the castle were bemused by the apple troops.

Was originally considering a scenario where the fruit would be scaling the wall with a long rope...but decided it would be impossible to actually see the fruit once it was hanging from a great height.

Perhaps if I can obtain larger, more highly visible fruit, I will do it :)
Though it might actually be dangerous to have watermelons hanging overhead.
