Secret Wall Tattoos by rongo rongo

August 12th, 2010 3:52 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Be inspired by this website to make some hidden art in a place that is not your own.

To clarify, secretwalltatoos.com displays works of art (paintings and drawings) that lie hidden behind objects such as mirrors, photographs, and paintings. Hiding such art - on the wall, and not in your home or place or business - is your goal

I was in a grim, seedy hotel feeling annoyed by the state of artificial intelligence research and impatient to head out for this year's Harry Potter convention when I realized that I should not pass up the tasking opportunity at hand.

This hotel was in pretty bad shape. The faucets dripped, the shower only half worked, the carpet was grimy, and the electrical outlets were all loose. I think the addition of this secret wall tattoo improved the room.

I got so excited about the secret wall tattoo idea and my phoenix design that I went looking for another good place to install it.

Phoenix as stenciled

I think the gold spray paint contrasted nicely with the black metal.

And, a radiator is a pretty hot place. So appropriate for a phoenix nest.

I never realized that these fire hoses pivot out on a rack, exposing the wall behind.

Just a lingering scent of spray paint.

The main hallway was too busy, even late on a Sunday, so my installation is in one of the side hallways.

That is a very pretty bird! And you have some nerves of steel!

Thanks! I had people walk by both of the last spots right as I was putting stuff away, but they didn't stop to investigate.

I love the phoenix. And yours is intriguingly abstract, and very elegant. Fitting.

Thank you. I based the design on a tattoo image, but modified it to work with stenciling.

Wow, the firehose housing!
I guess I never imagined you 'd task in such a bad-ass style, I mean, going out to get a can of spray paint during an academic meeting? hats way off

Sorry to mislead---the spray paint part was after the meeting, once I'd gotten back to Boston and my personal stash of spray paint. I am not *that* cool :)

I'm in favor of your phoenix.

Thanks. I'm also pro-phoenix. Handy if one is apt to crash and burn with any regularity.
