Mirror Installation by rongo rongo

September 24th, 2008 6:06 AM / Location: 42.396509,-71.12254

INSTRUCTIONS: Install a mirror in a public space.

I installed both a physical and metaphorical mirror to reflect on one of my favorite locations, Davis Square in Somerville, MA. I used the metaphorical mirror (a sign, some index cards, and a marker) to give away the physical mirror (stained glass and mirrored glass). The instructions on the sign were to leave your contact information and write down something you like about Davis Square for a chance to win the stained glass piece. After installing the mirrors, I stuck around for a few hours to record reactions. (See photo captions for the complete story.)

The physical mirror reflected traffic, passersby, pigeons, clouds, and pieces of this and that. Since the mirrored glass was in fragments and the entire mirror was swinging in the breeze, you'd just get glimpses of the surroundings. The metaphorical mirror produced little snapshots of the area like this:

"I love walking into the square & finding a mob of people I know"
"Love Blue Shirt & oatmeal yogurt"
"I (heart) Mr. Crepe!"
"It's a nice place to live that doesn't require a car!"
"ART HAPPENS"
"I like the people and the cool art!"
"I like that Davis is so pedestrian & bike friendly"

I liked that the physical mirror was reflected in the metaphorical mirror (i.e. the mentioning of nearby art).

Davis Square

Davis Square

Most squares in Massachusetts do not have four sides. This one has six streets intersecting. The graphic from this sign has been adopted as a sort of logo for the neighborhood.

Make your own stained-glass Davis Square logo

I made this pattern based on a picture of the sign. It is appropriate for beginners in the art of stained glass, since it has no curved pieces, though some of the angles are rather acute.

Cutting the glass

Cutting the glass

I used a $3 glass cutter from Home Depot and a metal ruler, along with specialized glass breaking piers.

The pieces

The pieces

I used mirrored glass for the parts of the sign that represent streets, and a wavy textured blue glass for the background.

Foiled

Foiled

Then, I applied copper foil tape to the edges of the glass. This is critical, because lead solder does not stick to plain glass by itself.

Ready to solder

Ready to solder

At this point, you can pretty much tell what the finished stained glass will look like. The solder will cover the foiled edges and also fill in any gaps between the pieces.

A big soldering iron

A big soldering iron

It's a lot like an electronics soldering iron, but much larger.

Installation

Installation

I always forget that things are much smaller when you take them outside. Both my mirrors (the glass one and the paper one) are rather tiny once installed. But, it's a high pedestrian traffic area, and something at eye level should be noticed.

Brave soul

Brave soul

Here you can see one of the large Davis Square signs above where I installed my stained-glass version. Possibly, some of the folks who stopped to read the sign but didn't enter were wary of leaving their contact info. Yet, a few people took the risk that I might be a nutcase who wanted to send them spam email.

And the winner is selected

I had my friend Moussie assist with drawing a winner from the small pile of cards. I contacted the winner and dropped off the stained glass at his house (no pictures of that part). His email reply to being notified was "Yay! And thank YOU for making it and giving it away! I feel totally lucky. :)"

That's wonderful!
I wanted to give a full 5p vote, but ther's not more left of my points. I might have to task again soon!

I can't say I have any good general way to avoid breakage or burns, but I was pretty luck with this project.

Here's all my vote points right now. Maybe I can borrow more on credit? I wish.

After all, why shouldn't there be an economic wackiness in SF0 when everything outside is turning upside down?

Or, maybe I'll just work harder. Either way, this is awesome.

Ooh, maybe if we all spend all our vote points on credit, we'll trigger a federal vote point bail out.

I'll wait until I have enough votepoints to come back and give this a nice 5pt vote.

The self-photo in the mirror is cool!

I know that the whole point of mirrors is that you can see yourself, but every time I saw my reflection, I was momentarily surprised. "Hey! That's me! In the mirror! Oh yeah, right, mirrors do that..."

The øconomy has recovered, points abound, and you earned these a long time ago.

Wow! I think what I love most about this task is the psychological aspect, it's extremely unlikely something that was being put up as a prize would be uninstalled prematurely.
