Plastic Plant Liberation by rongo rongo

INSTRUCTIONS: Release a fake plant into the wild.

The urban wilderness can be found in neglected pockets of space where people don't go, and unexpected intersections of disorder and artificiality. Here's my celebration of real sunshine and fake sunflowers.

Meet me by the giant milk bottle

Meet me by the giant milk bottle

A friend of mine was visiting Boston, and I thought he'd enjoy an introduction to SFZero. We discussed some tasking possibilities, and settled on Plastic Plant Liberation. While waiting for him to arrive at the rendezvous spot, I noticed that some willow trees had just been pruned, so the ground was covered with long willow whips.

Materials close at hand

I sat down and started weaving some into a garland.

Real leaves

Real leaves

My friend arrived and we sat in the sunshine under the willow tree, braiding some long garlands. Then we put them on, and started looking around for a good spot to release some fake plants.

Leafy

Leafy

I don't know why people don't wear leaves more often. They made me feel a little bit like a tree.

Here and there

Here and there

We walked around the block and up the street, and saw a dark corner under some outdoor stairs up to a bridge. This seemed like a promising space for some fake hothouse flowers.

Real artificial

Real artificial

First we stretched the willow garlands across the space, attaching them to some nails sticking out of the concrete. Then we wired some faux red poppies and some purple orchids onto the garlands.

Synthetic sunshine

Synthetic sunshine

The concrete wall had a few holes, which we filled with clusters of sunflowers.

Bag of flowers

The fake sunflowers and mums came from a local dollar store. The poppies were left over from The Canon task, and the orchids were a souvenir from a Tiki restaurant in SF.

Goose, not fishing

Goose, not fishing

Ironically, with no deliberate enticement on my part, this goose walked over and hung out with us as we worked. It got a lot closer to me than the geese that I'd been baiting during my last task. I was nervous that it might try to eat some fake plants and choke, but it was just checking out the scenery.

Under the stairs

Under the stairs

After we finished, this concrete nook under the stairs was looking downright cheerful.

Underfoot

Underfoot

I think these plants will like their new home. I hope the bit of color will make some passersby notice the space, and maybe start looking around in other spaces for something unexpected.

Sometimes, you get that perfect feeling that there is nothing you would rather be doing, and nowhere else you'd rather be. It was that kind of day.

Beautiful decoration of "neglected pockets of space... unexpected intersections of disorder and artificiality". Also, giant milk bottle.

Goose!!

if they appear in any more of your tasking it's definitely an omen. an omen of what, i cannot say.

... well, probably that your goose population needs some biocontrol!
