Discovering What Doesn't Change by rongo rongo

January 7th, 2011 3:15 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Find something untouched by the ravages of time; something the same as it was in the past.

The past doesn't change, despite our dreams of time travel and time turners. But the way we remember and are influenced by the past does change.

Way back in the Dark Ages (no cell phones! no Google!), I dropped out of high school after feeling dislocated by a cross-country family move. Before that, up through my freshman year in high school, I'd been in the same public school system with a lot of the same people year after year. This year was our 20th class reunion, and I returned to my old home town to meet up with some of my classmates.

Here's what hasn't changed.
1. We all hope to be liked and understood.
2. We care about each other, and about what happens in the world.
3. We secretly like pretty sparkly rainbow unicorn things, even if we kind of want to be more sophisticated than that.
4. We'll still indulge in a good eye-rolling, when the occasion calls for it.

Here's what has changed.
1. We're more sure of ourselves, but less sure that we know everything.
2. We're not as self-absorbed, at least not all the time.
3. We take more responsibility for our health, happiness, and sanity.
4. Our hair. The 80's were a special time for hair spray.

Maybe it's impossible to really know anyone else, but you can read in the photos what I know hasn't changed about each of us.

What doesn't change
Four leaf clovers and magic potions
Always moving forward
Surrender Dorothy
Past, present, future
What's cooking
Driving there
The few, the proud
Going places
Getting into the mood

It's not that hard if you're willing to do mediocre writing!

Unsurprisingly, this praxis is insightful, generous of spirit and thoughtful.

You're one of my favorites. have i said that? i'd hate to bore you with repetition.

I've heard from a couple people in a position to know that it's important to stay in touch with people who knew you when you were young, who remember you that way. That resonated with me.

Thank you.
And I hope your future includes lots of old friends.

Bonus point!!

3 for a (admittedly, expectedly) good task, 1 bonus point for rocking Nanowrimo :)

update! Hey! the page hadn't updated! I only had 3 points :( - I'll be back.

Also I need to task, this dearth of voting points is making me stingy. :P

Don't worry about the voting points...but I do appreciate the comments!
