Mirror Installation by rongo rongo

September 24th, 2008 6:06 AM / Location: 42.396509,-71.12254

INSTRUCTIONS: Install a mirror in a public space.

I installed both a physical and metaphorical mirror to reflect on one of my favorite locations, Davis Square in Somerville, MA. I used the metaphorical mirror (a sign, some index cards, and a marker) to give away the physical mirror (stained glass and mirrored glass). The instructions on the sign were to leave your contact information and write down something you like about Davis Square for a chance to win the stained glass piece. After installing the mirrors, I stuck around for a few hours to record reactions. (See photo captions for the complete story.)

The physical mirror reflected traffic, passersby, pigeons, clouds, and pieces of this and that. Since the mirrored glass was in fragments and the entire mirror was swinging in the breeze, you'd just get glimpses of the surroundings. The metaphorical mirror produced little snapshots of the area like this:

"I love walking into the square & finding a mob of people I know"
"Love Blue Shirt & oatmeal yogurt"
"I (heart) Mr. Crepe!"
"It's a nice place to live that doesn't require a car!"
"I like the people and the cool art!"
"I like that Davis is so pedestrian & bike friendly"

I liked that the physical mirror was reflected in the metaphorical mirror (i.e. the mentioning of nearby art).

That's wonderful!
I wanted to give a full 5p vote, but ther's not more left of my points. I might have to task again soon!

yay for stained glass! that's awesome. I've done some work with it before and can never quite manage to not burn myself or break things. wow.

I can't say I have any good general way to avoid breakage or burns, but I was pretty luck with this project.

Here's all my vote points right now. Maybe I can borrow more on credit? I wish.

After all, why shouldn't there be an economic wackiness in SF0 when everything outside is turning upside down?

Or, maybe I'll just work harder. Either way, this is awesome.

Ooh, maybe if we all spend all our vote points on credit, we'll trigger a federal vote point bail out.

I'll wait until I have enough votepoints to come back and give this a nice 5pt vote.

The self-photo in the mirror is cool!

I know that the whole point of mirrors is that you can see yourself, but every time I saw my reflection, I was momentarily surprised. "Hey! That's me! In the mirror! Oh yeah, right, mirrors do that..."

The øconomy has recovered, points abound, and you earned these a long time ago.

Wow! I think what I love most about this task is the psychological aspect, it's extremely unlikely something that was being put up as a prize would be uninstalled prematurely.
