Exquisite Dérive by Sam Archer

INSTRUCTIONS: Go on a walking journey and every fifteen feet draw a chalk arrow in the direction you're going. At the end of the trip, leave a big pile of chalk so a stranger can continue your journey.

OR

Walk a short route alone, then send a collaborator the last segment of your trip so that they can pick up where you left off. You may complete this in separate cities by using more generic instructions (e.g. walk three blocks, then turn left). Finally, walk the complete route you and your collaborators have created.

My initial plan for this task was to walk around the Inner Sunset, which is a nice neighborhood that I enjoy wandering in and kind of already know pretty well. In the spirit of the dérive, I abandoned that plan entirely and started my journey on Bayshore Blvd, striking out for the interesting-looking warehouse district around there that I'd driven past many times but never explored properly.

Photos are a little sparse for the portion of the journey where I felt like I was being followed by a gang of hoodlums, since I didn't feel really good about taking out my phone at that particular time. Either I was imagining it or they eventually lost interest, because I ended up shaking them without incident.

The box of chalk you can see in the final couple of pictures was full when I started, so that gives you a rough idea of how many arrows I left behind me.
