Stripping by Kate Saturday

January 4th, 2011 3:23 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Make a series of short comic strips and post them, at regular intervals, in a public place for all to see.

At winter solstice, I moved from San Jose, CA to Minneapolis, MN. Along the way I left footprints in the form of comic strips in each state i passed through.

the California desert wants dogs to experience freedom
The first strip was more sentimental than subsequent ones.
I wrote my name and the website on the back for passers-by.
Posted at a Flying J just past the AZ border
At the Flying J truck stop at sunset. Pretty!
Driving into Flagstaff was the scariest driving. I didn't die, though.
Posted in the Flagstaff Visitor Center.
Seriously. 6" of snow last night.
New Mexico had some funny signs. AZ might have, too; hard to tell under all that snow.
Posted on the door of the Tourist Info center in Las Vegas, NM.
Such a lovely building!
Colorado is a big state.
Posted on the bulletin board at Bookends Cafe in Boulder.
Right next to Boulder Bookstore! That is why it is called Bookends.

See? so charming! and good coffee and veg sandwiches.
Evidence of my subculture: fixies and yarnbombing.
Missouri has some pretty trees and rivers, and some industry too.
I was basically in MO for 5 minutes, and 4 of that was the Broadway Cafe.
This tourist info hut was advertised on the freeway, but it was just a little hut in the parking lot of an Arby's or something.
I wedged MO into a window box.
Iowa was pretty snowy. A lot more hilly than MO.
Iowa was really uneventful, but lovely.
We finally stopped for another tourist info sign. It led us 20 min. into the mountains to a little town called Dows Depot, which smelled strongly of poop.
here it is from another angle. dude.
Also the tourist info center was closed.
But neither snow nor sleet nor closéd info centers, and all that. I taped it to the window.
Dows had a lot of character.
The destination.
Posted on the bulletin board at the cafe closest my house. also a main cafe for Minneapolis art.
get it? "long live thinking?"
where i've been, and where they still are

Cross country road-trips are awesome! I did one on my move from Florida to Oregon last fall, and it was spectacular!

Yes. Road trips are the magic.

Maybe, in part, because everything looks beautiful from far away. I'm glad you had a nice time : )

Yay for rabbit populations and the obliteration of vegan cookies.

These two things might reinforce eachother.

they aren't very well co-ordinated, so it could take a while. unless you take a hand in it... what do you think, tumbleweed catapult? sound like a task?

I love these cartoons. Such a great way to mark your progress through the states.
(You're on Etsy? Can we buy stuff?)
I hope you enjoy Minneapolis.

thank you. It's cold, but beautiful, and there are nice people here. You were here for a while, weren't you? I seem to remember your tasking around a lake.

Thanks for inspiring me, allowing me to voyeuristicly join you on your road trip! Memories of the flying J and my road trips from arizona to minnesota and minnesota to california came flooding back. Thank you for that!

oh yay! +1

that is AMAZING. a lot of the time i feel like a ghost, doing a thing that has no impact on the outside world and cannot be empirically proven to exist. YOU PROVE ME.
