This felt too easy. We already had an extra mailbox around. We found a boarded-up house and attached the mailbox using zip ties (those plastic proto-handcuffs). We'll see if it works. Anyone interested can send us mail at: 208 Dolores St., San Francisco CA 94103

the mailbox has vanished, and with it, our hopes of a truly Free Postal Service.

I'm worried about this too. It seems like someone is going to steal the box no matter where you put it. I just got two boxes off of the craigslist free section and I'm going to see what I can do to keep them in a location for longer than a month.
However, I wonder if your boxes were removed by the postal service....
checked up on the mailbox today and someone had smashed it pretty hard (possibly with a fist, not sure about that). We had to make repairs, now everything is OK again.
