Teams / INFØ / The Discourse of INFØ

posted by Jennifer Juniper on October 1st, 2008 3:15 PM

For Team INFØ !! I shall both volunteer and ask inane questions. I shall also task. Tonight, perhaps.

posted by Jennifer Juniper on October 1st, 2008 3:16 PM

How do people make the Ø and the ø all the time? Are we always copying and pasting from a word processing program? I think there's a magic secret.

posted by Loki on October 1st, 2008 5:06 PM

Regarding Juniper's question: in html, you can use ø and Ø. Or you can use the actual unicode characters in the text field itself, but how exactly you invoke them that will depend on what OS and software you're using. (In my case, the text editor I use has escape sequences for one-stroke øing. The UCS hex codes are D8 and F8.)

Regarding the group in general: it clearly fills a need, but I wonder if somewhere like the wiki might be a more natural place for this? There's no threading in group discussions, and in order to get here people with questions have to find it, figure out what groups are, and realize that they need to join in order to comment. But, it does mean questions will show up in the rss feeds and updates pages, which is good.

posted by JJason Recognition on October 1st, 2008 5:52 PM

If you have a Mac the ø can be achieved by pressing option-o for ø and option-shift-o for Ø.

Re: Loki's thoughts: I was actually considering making an event (one ending in the far future) to help new people. It'd be right there on the update page to catch new people's eye and there'd be threaded discussions. Anybody like that idea?

posted by Jennifer Juniper on October 2nd, 2008 8:44 PM

I don't have an opinion about an info team versus an info event. I do think threaded conversations would be better (I didn't realize these comments are not threaded, since they are threaded on praxes). One thing that's nice about the team approach is that us new players can pretty easily identify players who have been through several eras who are open to questions from newcomers. In that way, having the team's logo on one's player page is kind of like a badge.

posted by susy derkins on October 2nd, 2008 9:24 PM

Um, yeah, I am thinking the team format is not the right one for the question booth. No notifications, so questions could go unanswered, which would be terrible for a brave, hopeful nøøb. So, not a team. Although for this inside discussion the team could be fine, maybe?
I think we could try and see how an event works. Maybe INFØ volunteers could use the Monitor to follow it closely? Whatever it ends up being I think it should be linked from the "About" and "Tips for new players" page. And then archive the threads of questions in the wiki (wait, um, where is the wiki?).

And, about the Ø and ø? I´d say if cut and paste works, who needs codes? (well, my "p" key is broken, so a notepad for cut&paste purposes is already there...

-Edit-
(OMG, Sean is here! And this is just at the brainstorm stage!)

If you don't get updates when there's a question posted to the team, it just proves you don't trust Spidere enough to install his trojan.

I present to you... The SFZero INFØ Center!

The INFØ Center serves three purposes: (1) Provides a place to ask and answer questions about SFØ, (2) Provides a more user-friendly, up-to-date, and organic wiki, and (3) Provides a new format for creating user-contributed Newsletters!

The INFØ Center is a forum/board, yes, but it is devoted to providing information to new and old players alike. Here's what the categories mean:

News Stand - Creation and archiving or newsletters and important news in SFØ
Help Squad! - Ask and answer questions related to SFØ
Library - A collection of knowledge articles, as well as opinion pieces
The Café - General chat and anything that doesn't fit into the previous three categories

I hope you'll consider this as a viable solution, as well as the beginning of something... more. :)

posted by susy derkins on October 3rd, 2008 12:31 AM

But-but it quacks as a board and walks as a board... ah, yeah, you said that it is a forum/board. Um.

posted by Jennifer Juniper on October 3rd, 2008 5:08 AM

I lovelovelove the new forum. Before it takes off too far, which I think it might, may I very politely and deferentially suggest an ad-free forum space?

I give this whole effort a derkins.

Eh, something where posts show up on a page we're checking regularly *anyhow* seems a touch more helpful to me. Even if it lacks the ability to sort out different threads. (Which it doesn't; the team page may display comments in order but if you click to see more discourse you get all the normal features of comments on SF0 like the ability to make and see those quasi-threaded replies and the ability to comment vote.)

posted by Sean Mahan on October 3rd, 2008 12:37 PM

Ooh, speaking of (quasi?) threading, I'm just not sure how to handle that for teams, since (for the moment) teams only show the most recent 5 comments. So a thread "reply" would show up out of context, unless it showed the five most recently-updated threads—in which case why bother limiting the number of comments that show up here in the first place? Should all comments show up on the team's home page (many of which are pretty big already due to membership)? Should the only commenting option be to go to the "discourse" page?

And speaking of help, here's one suggestion for a division of labor: I think a team like this is good for answering questions, terms are good for "cultural" explanations (shplanks, journeys, derives, mustaches, eras, etc), and the wiki is a good place for "how to"s. We can scatter more of those question mark links around the site (like the HTML Editing one) if there's helpful content for them to link to!

posted by susy derkins on October 7th, 2008 10:46 AM

Question Mark Awareness, then :)
Maybe that´s all is needed.

posted by teucer on October 7th, 2008 11:39 AM

Ways to handle threading for teams:

1. Show the most recent n comments, regardless of threaded status. This is the current approach; the big thing going for it is that it keeps the team pages from becoming enormous - particularly on teams, like this one, that are destined to get quite a lot of discourse. If it's kept I would love to see it modified so that you don't have to go into the discourse page to mod a comment up or down, though.

2. Show the most recent n comments that aren't replies to anything, along with their replies in threaded form. This would be great for teams like INF0 here, since the current discussions would be shown in their entirety. I think this is what I like best.

3. Show everything, as per a task. I think this is my least favorite, but it's definitely an option.

4. Show everything, starting with the most recent base comments rather than the oldest. (Keep the oldest replies immediately after the comments they're applied to and the newest further down, though, so conversations don't get confusing.) This is like option 3, except that you don't have to scroll down for the current discussions.

5. Show only a link to the team's discourse, behind which it would look the way it currently does.

6. Show the n most recent comments. If one of those comments is a reply to another, display it as such. This probably doesn't work with low values of n.

Hey - how come the University of Aesthmatics has such a high proportion of new tasks? I know there was some kind of revolution in a previous era (I haven't read all my history yet) ... but is there a relationship between the revolution and the high number of tasks? Thanks!

posted by Jennifer Juniper on October 7th, 2008 3:41 PM

Another question: I can tell that people get access to proposed (pretired) tasks because I can see where my befriended people have commented on the proposed tasks. Is this a secret door that is unlocked only once one reaches another level?

If it will take away an important amount of mystery from the game, please decline to answer the question.

:-)

posted by susy derkins on October 7th, 2008 9:42 PM

Mmm, I think there is always a higher proportion of UofA tasks. Maybe they are easier to create and/or get approved? Dunno. And that disproportion was part of what was discussed, rebelled against and defended during the revolution. You might want to start reading about that where we first did.

Sometimes people do their comletions with nice fonts or in a nice layout. Tiny pictures and text next to it. I want to do this as well, this is pretty. How does it work?

posted by Lincøln on October 9th, 2008 10:29 AM

Well, Babe, for the spacing of the photos, you'll notice when you insert a proof photo the default options in the html have it set for a size of 100 and alignment left, you can go in and change the size to whatever you like, and the alignment the same way.

To change the font, you have to know what font you want to and then use the html font= attribute. Look at this. Or this. Or any number of html guides available online.

Thank you Lincoln for joining this team! Future completions will be in proper layout!

posted by Lincøln on October 9th, 2008 2:02 PM

I didn't join to begin with because I don't think a team is good place to have these types of conversations or discussions. But since that's where ya'll are, that's where I are.

Help is requested.

1) What is 'shplank'?
B) Why do photo captions appear twice?
iii) What is the significance of Ø?

Thank you in advance,

the cloud man

posted by Burn Unit on October 11th, 2008 12:33 PM

1) What is 'shplank'? - It's sort of like currywurst, except it's kosher and it usually has sesame seeds sprinkled over the top.
B) Why do photo captions appear twice? - It is an artist statement. Think of it as the game's collaboration in your proof. When the game grows bored with the technique, it will probably stop happening. Repetition is a form of change.
iii) What is the significance of Ø? - Only twice, and neither time was really my fault.

Perhaps you thanked us too soon?
BU

posted by The Cloud Man on October 11th, 2008 4:18 PM

No, this is exactly what I needed to know.

Gone to eat shplank.

posted by Jennifer Juniper on October 16th, 2008 8:19 AM

(1) Shplank as defined in the wiki
(2) I have no idea, and hadn't noticed that they do appear twice.
(3) I don't know either. In my personal belief structure, the ø began as a "this would be a cool name for the game and we need to include the slash so people don't think it's the letter O." And the ø has become a trademark, tattoo, signifier, hobo mark, and secret handshake.

That's the best I can do, and I hope it's helpful. Hope you are having fun!

I always assumed that the zero was a play on SFO, the name of the airport in San Francisco. But then all the other localzeroes became two letters and a slashed zero, and since then, the glyph has taken on a life of its own.

Re: SFØ history and the Revolution and the U of A, I find this most informative (as well as totally awesome, not surprising in view of it being a GYØ Ben creation).

How come I can only see two pages of praxii from this era now, only going back to 10/13 (I think). Where please have gone all the other early completions from this era? (And yes, I clicked "clear all filters.")

Thanks!

posted by done on October 20th, 2008 2:08 PM

If you visit the praxii page it shows the praxii of one week. You can click in the menue on the left to show one month, the era or all time praxii and you also have lot's of options on how it should be ordered. I like the option "activity" cause you can see where people recently voted for or left comments, that's sometimes a nice way to get to know older tasks. Also if someone updates their task it shows up there.

What is the media folder and how do I access it?

Also what does the "move to media" button do and would it take away the repeat pictures at the bottom of the praxis?

thanks

posted by Lincøln on November 25th, 2008 9:31 PM

The media folder is where all of your media that is uploaded to SFØ goes to. All of the pictures and audio and whatever that you upload (either through email or direct upload to the "Upload Files" section of a task) onto SFØ is stored in your personal media folder. The pieces of media that are solely in your media folder (meaning not used in a proof) can be accessed by looking at the bottom of the "Upload Files" section of a task you're working on. Just click on "show" down there and you'll see all of the media you have stored. To put a file into that folder you'll notice that all media in your "Upload Files" section (when looked at in the big window on the left) has three buttons on the bottom, those buttons are "update", "move to media" and "delete". If you click "move to media" it'll go to the media file.

If you want the address of a specific file from your media folder, click on the image in your media folder, then click on the box that appears that says "add selected files" and in your proof click on "view file" and it'll open in a new window, use the url of that window to grab that image and use it somewhere else (like comments or whatever).

posted by Josh on November 25th, 2008 10:16 PM

Wow, all cleared up now. That show button makes all the difference!

posted by susy derkins on November 25th, 2008 10:21 PM

Also, in theory you can send files to your account by email, but I have never be able to do that.
And the duplicate pics in the bottom are going to be there always, that´s the "file pile", it confused me a lot too. But for long praxii (say, Lincoln's Player Picture) they turn into thumbnails, at the bottom, so they are not duplicates anymore.

Some people don't insert files into the write-up at all, so all the story goes in the captions.

(Are you dizzy yet?)

posted by done on November 26th, 2008 4:05 AM

I am using the e-mail for sending files to my media folder all the time(not really all the time, but all the time I'm uploading). It didn't work a few days when the era was reset, but now it's good again and it safes lot's of time when you have to upload lot's of pictures.

posted by King of Spain on February 10th, 2010 7:25 PM

is it a task until it's completed, at which point it becomes a praxis? how does one pluralize 'praxis'?

furthermore, is there a place where all of the things that people write in response to things you've written hang out? a place were they can be found without digging? I kind of respect the fact that they don't seem to be handed to you, it's a nice excuse to spend more time here...

don't think you've seen the last of me, I will be back to question you silly.

posted by Waldo Cheerio on February 19th, 2010 3:47 AM

@KingofSpain:
A Praxis is the process of completing a task. A proof is your writeup. Often, there is not too much of a distinction between what you did, and how you documented it, as most tasks are directed at the SF0 audience, and so your praxis and your writeup both contemplate the same message, goal, and style.

As far as plural nouns are necessary, you might refer to someones completions, but I focus more on the verbs, and will compliment someone for their tasking. Rather than being prescriptive about the "correct" way to use these terms though, you will be understood perfectly well if you say "great praxes." If you want to make a subtle distinction between what they did, how they did it, and how they described it though, the nomenclature can be helpful to convey what you mean.

As to comment responses, there are three partial answers. First of all, by befriending any player, you are privy to updates on anything they do on your "updates" page: http://sf0.org/ophelein/updates/ . If you want to check for any responses on anything you ever wrote, you would do to check through the archive of your "texts": http://sf0.org/ophelein/texts/. Finally, if you want to actively control some sort of notification scheme for particular comments, you should use this tool: http://sf0.org/Spidere/Keep-Your-Eyes-Peeled/

Cheers,
~Waldo
