The Gift Of Task by Fonne Tayne

May 10th, 2007 8:30 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Make a task for a specific person to complete. Give it to him/her as a gift. Your task must be generic enough such that anyone can complete it.

Burn Unit and I had a quick chat the other day about how the actual big-red-X process works out. He and I are both apparently in the dark, but there's no question that people flagging get X-ed. My only question was, with all the craziness happening, how many people does it take?

dear sir,
how many flags does it take to earn a big red x?

i'm not referring to your work, of course.

best,
IMV

I was genuinely curious, and he apparently had questions, too.

Good question. I Sure as heck do not know. I always thought the X was a final decision of Sean and/or Ian and/or Sam, and that maybe when a critical mass of flags was reached, something automated notified them that it had been flagged and they would decide if it was time to disallow.

Have you ever received a flag notification or an X? I dont' think I've had a task ever receive the X. I wonder if I could deliberately get one and find out what that process is like.... hm.

Why on earth do you ask?
J

Then I disappeared for a day and came back to an SF0 full of chaos.

Well, in the time since i last logged on, (since tuesday early afternoon) it seems that the matter's been resolved, albeit not in the most pleasant way. There's a new player in biome that i've been affectionately referring to as Icarus, even though i guess the gender is inaccurate there.

i messaged some of you that i've seen make constructive comments about over-hyper score-seekers but i didn't check back til 24 hours later...

in reality, i think it was just that it happened so fast that there wasn't anything to do until ....sometime yesterday or this morning. if only i had been more dedalus-like and warned/advised in a more gentle way.

i think lowteck's description rather suffices for now.
"come back vicki venom, whoever you are"

Alas, fickle intentions.... perhaps it'll work out.

Anyway, to answer Burn's questions about 'doing it deliberately,' I created SUICIDE!! just for him. Now, since it only filtered through as having a measly 15 points (though that seems just), I will remind Burn ofwhat he's already declared, and hold him to it. Go for the drive!

Yeah you don't want to commit the kind of suicide he did.

ah, I get it now. I couldn't figure out why you were asking me about that!intriguing. Um, let's see, that could be very fun. I must disagree, Paul Reubens has had an illustrious career and has survived his "suicides." Based on the task, I want to commit basically exactly his kind of suicide: maybe a Little wrath, but the long term lovability would still be there.

Also, I want to say that I got friended by Vicki Venom at some point early in the day in question--I never question accepting friendship offers, though I *do* think very long and deliberately with savage malice aforethought and strategery about my foes--and at the end of the day I went to see who this Vicki Venom actually was and it was like a crazy rollercoaster! She was already at level four or five! but all her tasks said "I want to give back my points" and her user pic was gone. Dude. whaa happen?

So I took pains to got ahold of her and we actually got a chance to chat for a good while. I wouldn't count Ms. Venom out too quickly. I tried to encourage her not to let some bad apples or bad feelings ruin her effort and promised to offer constructive criticism too, which I think several players are really good at. I wish to urge other players to cast our messages as constructively as possible, with an ear for the impact of what we're saying. Particularly anyone out there who throws the word "cheat" around lightly. I do not know who did--naturally Vicki Venom is perfectly capable of keeping her own counsel on that--but dang, that seems over the top. You're probably the only person reading this comment exchange, Zemaluco, so maybe it won't even matter. But anyone else who sees this? Burn Unit: against calling people "cheater" without really thinking it thru. ALSO against crude attacks, passive aggression, and The Egg Board.

IN any case, I shall endeavor to commit a proper task-suicide one of these days. I'll have to be careful, though, and not make it too obvious! That would invite MY wrath if I got caught and people accused me of trying to fake a suicide. Or wait, maybe I *should* act quickly because people will be hesitant to flag it for fear of giving me an entree to suicide points. Dang, this is complicating before my eyes!

All I know is maybe you should wait 'til after the election to complete the suicide task, BU. Now's not a time for any bad rep, and your opponents could use the big red x in their campaigns against you, whether it was intentional or not.

a note to all players

maybe yall should just flag and not vote instead of commenting...

or at least check to make sure no else left the "try harder" comment. and personal messages like the ones described here aren't going to accomplish anything GOOD. picking on people is mean and its not like other top players haven't done tasks tasks that are completely uninteresting. don't pick on the new person. thats proly the worst thing one can do to keep this game alive and it just makes you look like a useless jerk.

just to set the record straight.... i didn't let fly with any 'cheat' or 'fool.'

at this point everything i said (minus one) is in the public domain.

i tease, but i don't get mad at such things.

Thanks for the gift. I'm still working on it. Meanwhile, be sure you don't earn one yourself on your way up!
