I made medals as prizes for my March 16th steampunk scavenger hunt, "Tempus Fugit!" Dax attended the hunt and really liked them. He asked all kinds of questions about how they were made - he was considering making some as prizes for Journey to the End of the Night: Chicago. After talking about it with him for a little while, I volunteered to make them myself, paying for all the materials and donating them to the cause. Viva SF0!
I made some mock-ups and met with Dax. He decided to choose the silver fleur-de-lis with blue ribbon for the runners and gold stars with red horizontal ribbon for the chasers. I started with 1.5" unpainted wooded circles, and glued on plain wooden stars and fleurs-de-lis. Then I painted them with acrylic craft paint. While that dried, I prepared the backings. I traced the wooden circle onto black sticky-back felt, then used a small hole punch to put two parallel holes in each circle. I opened up a 1" jewelry pin back and threaded it through the holes. By the time I finished all 50 of those, the paint had dried. I cut blue and red fabric ribbon to length and notched the end to prevent them from fraying and for extra fanciness. The ribbon got glued down first, then I peeled the sticker backing off the felt, added a little glue for security, and stuck them to the backs of all the medals. Finally, I gave them all a coat of clear varnish.
And...the results! :) (Thanks to d-clare for letting me borrow her praxis to complete mine! I didn't have very much time to take photos last night.)
first chaser in = d-clare and her medal!

I like to work on the floor, where I can spread out as far as I want to, and stretch or fold my legs as needed. I find desks and tables restrictive. The bed will also do, if the crafting isn't too messy.
