Tapes and Tapes by Jellybean of Thark

July 27th, 2008 8:38 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Create media--like a mix tape--and then plant it somewhere for a stranger to find. See the Chicago Tapes Project.

Let's get analog!

Well, it's called Tapes and Tapes, yeah?

Strangely, this task took me a while to get done because of that. I wanted to use cassette tapes. Once I got that idea in my head, nuthin' else would really do.

Those are pretty hard to find, as it turns out. Well, hard for me to find.

While I was looking, I put together the list you see below. It's weird, but sometimes when you're putting a mix tape together the impulse can lead you to be a bit of a show off, to get real cool. That's exactly what I was trying to avoid. All I wanted though was just a fun bit of music, something a random listener could enjoy having a listen to. I wanted to avoid looking like I wanted to dazzle, and blow their minds with how cool my music collection is. Which it isn't.

Inside of each case, I left a short note explaining this to the potential listener. As well as asking them to do the same thing if they enjoyed it. I left my email address inside, as I wanted to also know if they liked it.

Here's the playlist, tested out by me. It works great, I can't have a bad time listening to this.

I also left my email address if they want the track list that I didn't supply, which goes like this:

  • Livin' In the Sunlight, Lovin' in the Moonlight - Tiny Tim

  • Debra - Beck

  • Sleepwalk - The Chantays

  • Breakfast at Denny's - Combustible Edison

  • Derrick! - Derrick Harriot

  • Rain From the Skies - Delroy Wilson

  • Jocko Homo (acoustic) - Devo

  • Beautiful World - Twink

  • Ode to Joy - City of Prague Philharmonic

  • Angelina/Zooma Zooma - Louis Prima and the Witnesses

  • Overture from "A Few Dollars More" - Ennio Morricone

  • Hawaiian War Chant - Billy Mure

  • I Will Go Sailing No More - Charlie Louvin

  • Honeysuckle Rose - Harpo Marx

  • Stardust - Hoagy Carmichael

  • Somewhere Over the Rainbow - Israel Kamakawiwo'ole

  • Jesus Was Way Cool - King Missile

  • Jet Pack - Jill Sobule

  • I Think I Need a New Heart - Magnetic Fields

  • Flying Saucer Attack - The Rezillos

  • Excerpt from Slaughterhouse Five - read by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

There are things that I've always enjoyed drawing.  These are light bulbs, eyeballs, and rocket ships. So that is what I used to decorate the labels.

I made three tapes, because, well, I just like the number three.

The Music Section of Barnes & Noble in the Americana mall.
I slipped it into the "T" section, for "Tapes.  I wanted to see if someone would snag the tape.  So I slunk off to a safe peeping distance to watch that happen, but I was so good at it that I completely missed it happen.  It disappeared after a few minutes.

Glendale Public Library - History of Los Angeles Section.
I sat myself down in a chair where I could watch the shelf where I'd left the tape, but as it got closer to closing time, I realized that it wasn't going anywhere in a hurry.

The stairwell by the men's room at work, on the fourth floor.
I know that this one's going to be there for a while.  There's a soda can next to the water pipe, it's laid there for almost a year.  Even maintenance doesn't seem to come in here.  I liked the idea of leaving a little musical time capsule.
     Anti-climactic Update:
10/10/08 - I went from checking the stairwell every other day, to every friday, and then the last time I checked was two weeks ago.  I just went to have a look, and the tape is gone gone.  Still no contact from the recipients of the tapes.

Get sleuthing, gumshoe. Tape 2 might be gone by now. Tape 3's going to be there for a while.

Now that I think about it, there are some visual clues in my past praxis that might tip you off as to where tape 3 is hiding.

Not that this will stop me from making more and hiding them for fellow players.

Oh, I know where they all are (were), it's just I'll be out of town for the next four days, making the possibility that I can get there before they're gone a slim chance.

Your note inside, what did it say?
Do you get obsessed with getting the tape to finish so that the last note is immediately followed by the sound of the tape disengaging from the, um, head thingie?
Thanks for the stealable list :)

I didn't include the note as part of my proof because each of the three notes were pretty different.

The gist of it was something like this:
"Good evening,

I'm glad you found this, and I hope you enjoy listening to it. Some of the music you may recognize, some you won't. My intention is not to dazzle you, or blow your mind with how amazing my taste in music is. Your having a good time is my only goal. If you enjoyed this, please consider doing something similar.
Thank you,
C.M. Gonzalez"

I also wrote in my email address and the url for the game.

Susy,
When using the machine depicted, I don't get the sound of the head disengaging from the ribbon. But depending on what song is following what, I will obsess and play around with the interval between songs.

The cover fell off the tape player, and I guess I should have played around with the speed with which the little drums turned.

This is lovely.
And: Hooray! You're tasking! It's far too rarely that your name shows up on the praxis page of this game!
