INSTRUCTIONS: Create something hidden that reveals itself slowly, like a Toynbee Tile.

FAQ

Q: Why is there an FAQ before the praxis?
A: I figured that'd be the easiest way to explain everything.

Q: So how is this completion valid?
A: The praxis itself will reveal itself slowly, over time. It will begin mostly hidden, and eventually be revealed piece-by-piece.

Q: What is being revealed?
A: A series of several images which are currently blacked out. Each image represents a task which I have completed, but am not submitting the praxis for. Instead, I have condensed these praxes into a single, hopefully interesting and well-captured photograph.

Q: How are they going to be revealed?
A: Each image is divided into 5 portions. For each vote I receive on this task, I will reveal one section of the photograph that is currently being revealed. Once one is fully revealed, I will move on to the next.

Q: So which sections get revealed?
A: When you vote, just post- "Reveal section #...." If two people request the same section to be revealed, or a voter doesn't declare an intention, I'll just choose one at random.

Q: Isn't this just a ploy for votes?
A: No. I thought it'd be an interesting way of completing the task. Keep in mind each image represents a certain score that I chose not to receive, plus any votes I would have received on that completion. Almost certainly, I am receiving less votes by this method than I would otherwise. I think the total number of points just for the praxises for all the images would come to about 150- or 30 votes.

Q: What about sockpuppets?
A: No, I'm not going to go revealing all the photos immediately if someone spams me with 25 sockpuppet votes. Sorry! However, if I do get enough votes that all the photos are revealed, I will probably add some new photos. They may not completely represent a full praxis in and of themselves, but hopefully they'll be worthwhile.

Q: Anything else?
A: I'll be trying to keep a very close eye on this praxis today and in the future, but bear in mind it takes me a little while to update the images. Don't let that stop you from voting. I've definitely got more stuff in the pipeline for this task- a few more 'mini-praxes' are in the pipeline, but since getting to that point implies that I'll already have 25 votes, I'll tone down the megalomania and wait to upload those for now.

On to the images!

Here is your first image.

Image 1: Fake Fake Photography.

No, it's not photoshopped or edited in any way. This photo makes me smile.

Second Image: Fight the Future

Fight The Future

The sensation of smashing this glass was much more pleasurable than the image might suggest. I feel justified in my actions, as every time I had that clock in my room I could hear it tick, but without backlighting, it was useless in the dark. Take that, the future!

Fifth Image: Regular Animal Documentation

Regular Animal Documentation

There are a pair of mallards that hang around. I like how this image captures just how 'regular' they are-- the recycling bin being in the shot is intentional.

Fourth Image:Document Construction

Toynbee 4 DC.jpg

There's no great story here- this one was taken during MN0's completion of Portsmouth Sinfonia. I just thought the image framed beautifully.

Third Image: Time Heals

Time Heals

And time is still healing. I skinned my knee on concrete pretty badly. For the first few hours, it oozed blood, and then within 24-48 hours it took on the state you see here. It was very painful for a few days until the wound started to scab up. Then, the scab would loosen in hot water and partly come off, only to reform. This went on for a couple of weeks until it was mostly just raw fresh skin. It is still very obvious where I skinned the knee, as there's a big pink patch there.

Super secret sixth bonus image coming up soon!

Reveal section 2!

Damnit, this is going to work extremely well.

Well, it should work extremely well. It's a great way of doing the task, IMO. (And he's right that he's getting less votes than he likely would for the praxes being represented. I've already guessed what this one is and would likely be voting if he had submitted it as that... though partly I want to see more because I'm curious if I can at some point figure out what freeway he chose. My money's on know.)

Man, I totally thought number one was going to turn out to be Freeway Excursion and that some column of that was going to have you in it.

But yeah, this one's easier.

Yeah, I ended up just messaging, so I could use a lot of exclamation points...

Man, in that situation right there that'd be a dangerous freeway to be crossing. Or at least, it looks like it'd be dangerous.

You might have been going from the right to the left, and have passed the really scary part.

But yes, it would. It would be a voteworthy excursion, to say the least.

My poor, poor clocks...

No but I won't reveal one for you... unless you say different.
posted by Darkaardvark on June 13th, 2008 10:16 AM

man what

those clocks belong to everyone

(no subject)
posted by Spidere on June 15th, 2008 12:47 PM

That's true. It just brings me sympathetic pain to see them being so abused.

I should probably think of it at a higher level, that the destroyed clocks are a symbol, rather than any antagonism towards time itself, or even clocks. "Break the mirror to find yourself."

After all, I've ordered a few clocks burned in my time.

i like you.

I was planning on going in order... but if people want to skip around-- hmm. I don't want to give away all the images at once. Let's say we'll go to two at once, but no more. Since the new Reverend asked first, I'll reveal that one. Rainy, you can either pick another section from either image 5 or 2, or we'll get to image 4 when one of those two is completely revealed.

Guys, somebody has to bite the bullet and finish image 2. Otherwise we'll never be done with it, and we'll only meaningfully have 5 going.

(no subject)
posted by Darkaardvark on June 13th, 2008 1:38 PM

Eh. Both the images will get to a point where the intent of the tasking is pretty clear. Actually, most of them can be done in one guess by picking the center, as that's where the focus of most photographs are. But if people want to see more, they're going to have to vote, and so those two will get done. I think I'll say we won't move on to another image until both 5 and 2 are finished. And secret image #6 won't even be an option until everything else is done.

How can #1 make your smile? Totally freaks me out

I think it's a truck hooked up to the back end of another truck, getting 'towed'. I can see a rearview mirror on the left side that is too far away from the red cab to be attached to it.

Thirteen non-random sections have been revealed.

I count sixteen votes, which means there haven't been requests from all voters.

I for one want to see more of your unsubmitted praxes so that I can know exactly what it is you haven't written about.

(no subject)
posted by Darkaardvark on June 14th, 2008 11:05 AM

I'm gonna say that since there's only one section left as a choice to reveal, we'll count the last vote towards that. One other person has yet to vote and Spidere didn't want a section revealed.
