Creation Donation by Evil Sugar
June 7th, 2008 3:26 PMAll five gummy teams participated in this task.
The gummy bears had a whole bunch of blank cards left over from 1 Blank White Card, so they decided to make some tarot cards. Since they have mastered the art of You Change, gummies have no need for tarot cards. So they decided that would be the perfect thing to make for this task. They happen to know that Sparrows Fall is trained in the art of tarot card reading, so they figured they'd make a deck and give them to Sparrow.
What the gummies didn't realize is that a deck of tarot cards has 78 cards, and each card has a detailed and highly symbolic design. This would take them a very long time.* Still, the gummies are not the sort to sign up for a task and then abandon it unfinished, so they set about studying the relevant design aspects and creating the cards.
The gummies do not draw very well, so rather than draw each card, they decided to use props and costumes to act out the scene from each card. Evil Sugar then photographed each scene, and the photos (after being thoroughly cleaned up and processed in Photoshop) were printed and turned into actual physical cards.
The Minor Arcana

Each suit (swords, wands, cups, and pentacles) was assigned a different background color, using this site as a reference. The gummies used toothpick swords as swords, regular toothpicks as wands, laser pointer tips as cups, and pennies as pentacles.
Of the four suits, the cups were the trickiest to make:

Each suit has fourteen cards, 10 numbered cards (ace through ten) and 4 court cards:

The court cards (for all 4 suits) have blue-gray backgrounds. The bears for each suit correspond to the background color for the numbered cards (e.g., Ace-10 of swords were on a yellow background, so the Yellow Team were the royalty for the court cards).
The Major Arcana
In addition to the 4 suits, there are also 22 "trumps" in a tarot deck. To make sure the cards had lots of good divination-y symbols on them, the gummies used this site as a reference. They used a wide range of props and staging techniques to create the cards.
Making the Magician
As an example of how the cards were made, let's take a look at the magician:

Note the similarities between the cards. Both have a yellow background. Both depict the magician, holding a wand, with the infinity symbol above the magician's head. Both have a table with the objects from the 4 suits (sword, wand, cup, and pentacle). To achieve this effect, the card was laid out in 3D:

A guide was placed in front of the scene, so that the photographic image for the card could be cropped appropriately.
Props and Costumes

The following items were used as props for this task: three kinds of toothpick, pennies, laser pointer tips, index cards, several shades of colored paper, gummy worms, gummy dinosaurs, kleenex, industrial staples (for prisoner bears), and one silver necklace. All items were stolen from the supply cabinets of the Evil Human Overlord.
A Few Favorites
The full deck is available in the photos section of the praxis, but the gummies wanted to share a few of their favorites here in the text.

The Tower card seemed especially appropriate for a gummy tarot deck designed as part of an SF0 task.
The Physical Deck
Obviously, designing a bunch of digital images of the cards was not enough -- the task clearly says to build or make something. So far, all the gummies had done is design something. They uploaded all the images to a photo printing service, and 4-8 days later printed copies of the tarot cards arrived.

At this point, the gummies were feeling quite pleased with themselves. The cards looked nice, and the gummies on the cards were life sized:

The next step was to design the backs of the cards. Part of the point of this task, remember, was to get rid of some of the blank white cards that the gummies hadn't used. The gummies needed to come up with some artwork, and they decided that the best thing would be if the back of the cards had a picture of a bear on it. (Gummies like pictures of bears.) This was appropriate since, after all, the deck was a gummy bear tarot deck.
They loaded blank cards into the printer...

And created 78 copies of their design.

Now they had to trim the backs of the cards down to size and attach them to the fronts of the cards. They decided that the best way to do this would be to use magic.

Unfortunately, the Magician was unable to do the necessary magic.**
No one was sadder about this lack of magic than Evil Sugar, who was left with the task of trimming backs and gluing them to the cards. (Several bears had recently died after ingesting glue, and the gummies were unwilling to work with such a toxic substance again. Evil Sugar suggested that they could work with the glue without eating it, but the bears insisted that this was not possible.)
Even without gummy assistance, Evil Sugar was able to finish the deck:

The creation phase was complete. The cards were now ready for donation. The gummies decided to give Sparrow the cards as the final ending to "Leave Clues":
She found them:

UPDATE:
The gummies were pleased to discover that Rainy is very small! So they made Rainy a teensy tiny gummy tarot deck:

And wrapped the box with a little bow:

* NOTE: Gummies experience time very differently from humans. Therefore a week of 'human time' is approximately equivalent to a decade of gummy time. The gummies spent 42 gummy years on this task.
** NOTE: This is understandable, since the red gummy bear that played the Magician is an actor*** not an actual magician.
*** NOTE: Those of you familiar with "Fun With Food" may recall that gummies are not good actors. However, the roles for the cards were all non-speaking parts, and therefore not susceptible to the annoying avantLOL style of the gummy actors.

The gummies are pleased that you liked your gift.
Is there any chance of getting a copy of this deck in PDF format so people can print it out on cardstock and have their very own Gummy Tarot?
Because I would love a copy.
(EDIT: If there is no chance of such convenience, I will of course be forced to print out the images. This is too awesome to pass up under any circumstances.)
The gummies would be most pleased for you to have a copy of the tarot cards. Unfortunately, the cards are not currently available in .pdf format, only as individual .jpeg files. Is there a quick and easy way to convert them to a .pdf format?
Not quick and easy, but I will endeavor to do it myself for my own benefit and that of others.
Formatting it such that the cards have nonblank backs when printed from pdf might be tricky and thus may not happen.
The gummies thank you for undertaking this endeavor. The bears have excellent Photoshop skills, but outside of that, their computer skills are limited. If they can assist you (e.g., by ftp-ing the jpegs somewhere so that you don't have to download them individually), they would be happy to do so, just let them know.
(Also, the gummies just noticed that while there were photos of the backs of the cards, the raw image used had not been uploaded, but they have rectified this error.)

This file will not put backs on the cards, however - I haven't figured out the formatting for that one.
The gummies are most pleased that you have gone to the trouble of making this .pdf file, so that others can share in the joy of gummy tarot.
They have also noticed that you are a Rubin at the moment, and they hope that your SFZEROPRACTICAL exam went well (they are amazed you finished so fast).
I apologize to the gummies for being slower than I might have on the pdf - I was, in fact, busy with the practical, which did indeed have me as a Rubin for a while. Some might call such a rate of test-taking insane, but I do not know the term as I have chosen to borrow a dictionary from my dear friend Dirk Gently and it seems to be missing everything from "herring" to "marmalade".
The gummies are taking a more leisurely approach to the practical. They have completed the warm-up, and are only today starting on the extended response questions.
The bears quite like marmalade (it tastes like frosting) but have a strong aversion to herring (which most decidedly does not taste like frosting).
Dear Gummygirl,
Pitter-pat, my little heart.
Love,
Inky
Uber-Shplank.
With Awesome sauce.
This goes for all of your tasks.
Wow. Amazing. Just amazing. Wow.

I want a Gummi Tarot reading!
The gummies, alas, are no longer in possession of the gummy tarot deck. Perhaps Sparrows Fall could be convinced to conduct a reading...
This logo pleases the gummies. It might help them forgive (or at least forget) that you have nommed on their overseas contingent.
Is that why those few gummies who can act (as Grammi in the Misdirected Fan Mail task) are so very beloved?
Yes. Gummies with the ability to act in speaking roles are very rare, and admired both within the gummy community and (presumably) by humans.
i wasn't going to vote for this because i get so sick of hearing about the effing gee dee gummies in the comments... but- as per usual- your task is amazing. cheers.
this really is just about the best gift ever.
I can't get over how brilliant this is.
We humans are amateurs at tasking, it seems. Gummywow! (which is 10000 times more emphatic than normal human wow).
The gummies adore the term gummywow. They will add it to their dictionary, and use it liberally.
you are incredible!
once again, your praxis made my day.
:)
Once again, behind the ball. I was wondering from where these damned cards were coming.
This is excellent, exquisite, explosive. I'm quite stunned. Who are you? How many are you? I just don't understand.
The population of Gummyland fluctuates. Immediately after the Great War of 405, the gummy population was decimated. Only a handful of bears remained. But in the era of peace following the Great War, the gummies multiplied. For a time, there were nearly a thousand bears living in Gummyland.
More recently, the number of bears has dwindled once again. Scientific analysis suggests that this population decrease is directly related to the SFZEROPRACTICAL exam, which has taken the lives of many gummies.
The gummies hope that this answers your question. They also would like to add that while gummies are plentiful in number, Evil Sugar is just one person -- a human who is committed to documenting the lives of the gummy bears.
My understanding of the gummy way is now much greater. Gummywow, indeed.
1) wow
2) uhm.... wow
3) i... am.... in... complete... awe... and... adoration... of... you
4) wow
5) marry me...
please?
I'm pretty sure human-gummy marriage is illegal here.
Dearest oranguMinch,
The gummies quite enjoy your tasking. Particularly when it takes place in the bath. They are flattered and honored by your proposal, and truly do adore you -- but sadly gummy custom (and law) does not permit the gummies to wed humans.
Love,
The Gummies
My Dearest Gummies,
As much as it pains me to live without you, I understand. Please know that despite being unable to wed... my love for you is now one of my truths.
My heart is yours,
Minch
I mean what does it matter as long as you don't produce gummi-minches or sugar noodles or whatever out of wed-lock.
UPDATE: The gummies made a teeny-tiny deck for Rainy, and Rainy used the cards to do a tarot reading!
The gummies are very pleased to see the cards in use.
Those are amazing.
Where's the ohmyohmyohmymegavote button?
I just wet my pants in how excitingly amazing that was.
I clicked it about 12 times, how many points did you get?
It's still not enough.
The button does not generate points. It activates a machine located in the heart of GummyLand. When activated, the machine dispenses frosting.
You have made the gummies very happy.
Also, where did you get so many laser pointers?!?!
Actually, it was only two laser pointers, but they each had a variety of tips (e.g., smiley face, butterfly, batman logo). Evil Sugar got them for free at a movie theater that was showing Real Genius.
Was this movie theater, perhaps, the alamo draft house..
i hear they have rusty spoons and sunshine dust to spare...
Why yes, it was the alamo. Next time I go, I'll have to ask them for some sunshine dust.
I was trying to think of some witty, awesome comment but I'm speechless. This is beyond awesome. This is SUPERDOOPERMEGADOODLEYAWESOME!
This was the best gift ever. The best.
