Off The Top of My Head... by Lank

July 7th, 2007 9:05 PM / Location: 34.083123,-118.2951

INSTRUCTIONS: Find, make, or devise a hat or head-covering that describes a particular mood or happening.

I love hats!

For this task, I wanted to make a hat that expresses a mood or happening in a practical, fun way. I wanted the hat to be something that signifies that the wearer, whomever that might be, is experiencing said mood or happening. Maybe this could be a hat that could be donned at social gatherings, allowing all to see when someone... you get it.

The mood or happening that I chose to illuminate with my hat was safety. By safety, I don't mean protection from harm. Safety, in this context, is in reference to a state of being that many of my friends will enter into on occasion during safety meetings. It's a euphemism. One who has attended a safety meeting generally achieves an altered state of consciousness that results in finding endless humor in mundane things, cottonmouth, and munchies.

So I pillaged the old props and costumes of the theater that has been my second home in Los Angeles, found several things that hadn't seen light in years, and cannibalized for the greater good. The base structure was a plastic keystone-cop-style hat. I cut out letters as reverse stencils, spray-painted the hat, glued on a sparkley hat band that was lying around, and added a feathery concoction to the top. Voila!

Safety Hat!

I'm proud of it. I'm going to introduce it into the next party I attend and suggest that it be donned by anyone who feels particularly safe. I will post pics of the hat in use as soon as I get 'em!

8/03/7 UPDATE!

The Safety Hat has now achieved international fame as we celebrate the first annual International Safety Hat Day!

Basically, this included tons of my friends changing their default MySpace photos to photos of themselves wearing the Safety Hat. I was able to fill my "Top Friends" section with 20 of these! (see below)

These new pics were all taken at my going-away (from LA) party on Sunday, July 29th. You'll see yours truly in there, and our own anna one!

If there ever happens to be a 'safety meeting' in SF, it sounds like something I could be very interested in!

I love that Rainbow Bright called San Francisco "SF" which is the initials of the place that the term "safety" actually came from.

Man I wish that hat had made it up to SF when you were visiting! I would have loved to have known such a level of safeness, even for just a moment!

Im sensing this may turn into a cult. To blindly follow the hat of safety. Rocks my socks.

The hat should be at the Fools - I left it on a tall shelf near the door to the office.

It was at Journey LA. Everyone had a turn wearing it.

Now I know why.

But it's nothing a little photoshop can't fix. Maybe put in some DEA agents in the back being foiled by your SAFE state.

And a kitten. Photoshop and kittens go together.
