Night Photography by Lank
May 27th, 2007 7:06 PM / Location: 34.046543,-118.2347I've been inspired recently by some great completions of this task that I've seen from newer players. And in the spirit of the Living Garden of Tasks, I've re-completed mine.
Since my neighborhood changed a while back, I had new ground to cover in the cover of night. I didn't go out trekking around to find street art this time. I just explored my neighborhood. Specifically, I took photos of the text in my neighborhood. I wanted to see what it had to say.
Some examples (more below):

UPDATE 6/22/7:
I made a map of my route, in case anyone wants to check these out: map
enjoy!

Not the first thing I came across, but I like it as the default pic for this task completion! And I was lucky to get a car's headlights hitting it just as I took the shot. This is part of the Cache/Mear mural on Sunset.
rat gals

Night #1. These ladies are the hardcore hostesses of a laundromat parking lot on Melrose & Edgemont. Check out the little rat dude on the telephone pole in the foreground.
on fire

Same parking lot. Good placement because it's well lit at night. This wall has obviously seen many many works of art applied over previous ones. Could've worked with the hole in the wall better, but not bad.
melrose mike & the chicken bikes

This is on the wall of a furniture store on Heliotrope Ave, across the street from the Bicycle Kitchen. The chicks are Cache's. The sign between them says "Freedom".
mike

I just call him Mike because he looks kinda like a guy I know named Mike. He's probably meant to be someone else whose likeness I will be embarrassed not to have guessed.
floating

This woman, painted on the side of a bicycle shop, fades down into some kind of 3-D design made with some kind of paper product...
frida and...

This meat market on Santa Monica Blvd. sports what appears to be Frida Kahlo and... Pancho Villa? I don't really know who that's supposed to be...
convergence

It looks like two designs are meeting here at the corner of Santa Monica and Hoover, on the curved wall of a tire shop. Yes, the most common prefix for Silverlake phone numbers is 666.
silverlake yards

Not art so much as advertising. I just liked this because it was weird. Somebody took a corner of a fenced-off empty lot on Santa Monica where it meets Sunset and created this advertisement for their business. The best part is the little fawn in front of the picket fence.
snakes

The boards in the bottom of the shot make a makeshift wall that indicates that the building within is not to be entered. The building within is (used to be) a motel on Sunset Blvd called the Sunset Pacific. I wanted to get a shot of the whole building, because it's super-creepy, but it wasn't working out. The motel is in a shambles, totally decrepit and looks like it was condemned. There's just enough exterior light to see what the place looks like, but the place seemed otherwise dark. Some of the doors to rooms are wide open and there is mess and graffitti everywhere. However, there are also cars in the parking lot of this place, and on the night I was there, I noticed a blue light was on in one of the windows. This crappy shot is the best I could get from the street of this stairwell masterpiece. It's an outline of a man in suit and the text reads "United Snakes of Amerika" (with the "Amerika" off to the lower right of the figure). End of Night #1.
lamps

Night #2. Here's an odd one to start the night. There's a shopping center on Vermont & Santa Monica with a Staples and a Rite Aid and a Payless Shoes. It's also got a row of 18 different kinds of street lights in the middle of the parking lot. Most of them were on this night.
iron

This is on a concrete wall where residents of the adjacent homes on Sunset Blvd. in Silverlake park their cars. Kinda dark.
healing

This is definitely a santioned piece on the second floor of a clinic on Sunset in Echo Park.
monsterpeace

This is part of a mural by graffitti artists Cache and Mear on Sunset Blvd, in Echo Park. Not much light here. Cache has put up a lot of his little round chicks all over LA's East Side. I post some daylight shots of these in comments.
LA

Busy, busy, busy. An examination of gang life in LA, I believe. Of course the angelic female figure should have protruding nipples, Mr. Cartoon. This is located on a buiding at 3rd & Garey in Downtown that is literally covered - on every side - with street art. Some amazing stuff on there, but mostly too dark for me to photograph. Check comments later.
drones

This was the best shot I could get of this one with the available light. It's located on the same building (3rd & Garey). It continues to the left, where all of the worker bees are buzzing around a queen whose proboscis is a painted water spout. I like the "Bzzzzz" at the bottom.
cabezas verdes 1

This photo (and the next two) were taken of the side of a business on the corner of Temple & 3rd, downtown. Not sure why the little guy has his eyes blacked out.
city

This is presumably sanctioned art, since it's under a freeway overpass (Silverlake Blvd under the 101).

I really love these photos! Great job!
You must know that I agree with ya, S. I kinda think that our duel got swept under a rug a bit since the completion was posted so early (tactical error in judgement on my part). And true that folks should be reminded of our awesome DANCE IN FLAMES!
Sharing is caring!
that pretty much happens to all tasks. thats what the featured section is for
of course i did the same thing with futility... and others did follow suit. but still not very fair
I suppose you could say that this is all part of the learning process for the new Un-Submit button. I thought it was genius when you used it for Futility - that's why I followed suit!
If there are too many abuses of The Button, I'm sure the PTBs will do something about it.
At one point I wondered whether an SFØ message board would be a good idea, but quickly realized the horror that might ensue with tons of "Hey! Look at my completion! HEY!" messages.
Koyah gets a wrist slap for re-submitting! (Even though I'm glad he did!)
hehe there were way too many abuses on my part and I think I am now the only player that can't resubmit. i was kinda asking for it though
Intriguing travels and beautiful images, all captured quite well. Thank you for this guided tour!
Man, I wish we had street art of that quality in more places around DC.
I love the caution sign holding back all those post-it notes.
That's some sort of art installation, right? Looks too regular to be a real pin-board.
UPDATES! RE-COMPLETION!
Senator Unit noticed my new stuff while this page was still under construction.
So yeah, I re-did this task in my new neighborhood. But unfortunately, I somehow managed to delete most of the text from my original completion, when I sought out LA street art in the wee hours. Damn. At least the photos are still there.
Senator: the caution tape and post-it notes are on the entrance of Zazie, my favorite local restaurant, which is currently being remodeled. They left post-its and pencils so that patrons unaware of their closure could leave notes in case of a thwarted rendezvous. The post-its were mostly used by us locals to express our love. I wrote one that said, "WHERE DO I EAT?"
frida is right next to Emiliano Zapata.
