This is an ashcan.
This is the distance from the cigarette butt to the ashcan (approximately six feet).
This is trash.
This is a trash can.
This is the distance from the trash to the trash can.
twelve feet, four and a half inches.
This is ash and trash, after I'm through.
A man walked up while I was photographing this highlighted trash. He complimented my coat, and made sure to wait until the picture was taken to proceed walking. He didn't want to be rude and interrupt my photograph, you see. But before he went inside he threw his cigarette on the ground. It was still smoking where it lay next to these two:
I thought it strange that he didn't notice the fluorescent orange marks all around him.
The orange paint is a temporary marking spray used by construction and electric workers. It will fade. However, it looks like the typical vandal's spray paint and has been causing some commotion on campus, or so I hear. So I did it here, too:

...by telling my advisor about the temporary paint. when the outraged emails started circulating (chock full of the old cliché "two wrongs don't make a right"), he was able to explain away the "little art project." one woman was still angry and demanded that the anonymous perpetrator pick up the cigarette butts (this exercise was hopelessly beyond her comprehension, apparently), while the university architect cleverly critiqued my color choice. orange is for underground power lines; had i done proper research i'd have used white, which stands for "other." one nice result is that someone actually picked up all the ash and trash, leaving tiny orange coronas all over the grounds.
