Everyday Life by Myrna Minx
October 2nd, 2008 12:46 AM / Location: 40.753043,-73.98184Don't go to work, huh? We-hell, that's easy.
CUZ I DON'T HAVE A JOB!
And don't go to school, either? Well, in case you're unaware it's ROSH HASHANAH. And at a university in NY, well... that means there IS no school.
Now I have plenty of research to do, but I think it's time to Eschew My Responsibilities...
_EVERYDAY LIFE_
October 1, 2008 Anno Domini.
10:08 AM: wake up to a phone call, which I don't answer. continue to lay in bed.
10:43 AM: return phone call. My friend Gerald wants to make an excursion into the city. When you live in Stony Brook, NY, and someone offers to drive into the city, you take them up on it. Roundtrip on the Long Island Rail Road from Stony Brook is $18. Driving is a little cheaper, but then you have to worry about parking. I tell him to come get me. I get out of bed.
10:55 AM: enjoy a small breakfast of leftover Farfalle Carbonara.
11:01 AM: shower.
11:20 AM: compose a ridiculous outfit: a tailored jacket and pashmina scarf over a tattered t-shirt, a skirt constructed from what once was a pair of pin-stripe slacks, and grey running shoes with velcro closures- the kind that reallyreally old people wear.
11:34 AM: braid my wet hair in Gerald's car. we listen to Sonic Youth and talk about geek art stuff.
12:49 PM: park in Long Island City, Gerald's old neighborhood (he knows where the free parking is). From there we take the:

to the:

where we saw:

But sometimes the:

outside were more interesting than the:

inside. And sometimes I was just interested in my own reflection, like a parrot.

and then on the way out we found:

by Mail Artist and personal hero Ray Johnson. Then we wandered on down 5th Ave:

to my new Favorite Place In The World! I just discovered it today and it's the New York Public Library!

We continued down 5th Ave:

in the rain:

till we got to this bookstore:

where I bought Die Grünen Hügel Afrikas for $2. I needed raw material for translation exercises, and I've about exhausted my out-of-date copy of Parkett magazine. Further on we passed the Judson Memorial Church- a photo-op for art historians, i should say:

By now we were hungry so we went to 270 Bleecker St. for:

and then for coffee we went to:

where they had this menu:

the sfogliatella is the only thing on the menu in italics...
8:41 PM: take the subway back to Long Island City.
8:56 PM: head back to Stony Brook...
I get home and find that my friend Rachel has duly responded to an image i sent her yesterday. I had said something about my course of study making me LOL, and she said something about LOLart history, so i had to come up with a macro- and it looked like this:

this is what she sent in response:

which is frickin' hilarious, so at 11:22 PM i made this one:

and the conclusion of October 1st, 2008 found me wasting time on the internet, one of my finer talents.
The amount of NYC that i covered on foot while liberated from work and school is thus:

Nice. A vote for being a parrot - and the war-like grannies.
I was thinking much the same thing. It's like a really well executed derive praxis.
One of the first times I've EVER seen New York in something and thought "huh, it'd be quite cool to go there".
that dérive feel is interesting because Gerald very much had an agenda. the MoMA, the library, Strand Books, and Risotteria were his plan from the get-go. So really it was more of a Let-Someone-Else-Plan-Your-Day-Day.
I think perhaps that it was how you interacted and thought about the landscape rather than any sense of planned or unplanned...
but this made me miss and love New York all over again.
plus, the art history LOLz.... fabulous!!!!
Myrna, you're my hero :)
i've only been to nyc once (b/c I am an undereducated lout) and when i stepped out of the car for the first time and was like THE BUILDINGS ARE SO TALL CAN I LIVE HERE FOREVER?, that is what these photos made me feel like! I think because of the rain and the lights. WOW. *thumbs up*
I give you a point each for:
1) Mirror Self-Portrait
2) Flat Iron Building
3) Granny Peace Brigade
4) New York Public Library
5) Brilliant storytelling
Ohhhh you need to start a new website before someone gets all over it like creamcheez on a bagil!
Art history LoLs maybe "I can Haz wine and cheez?"
I love it!
this is my new vote icon for when I do not have vote points.
Do you really think it is appropriate to issue a check from an empire which you are not in charge of? I question your authority in doing so.
Norton, I do decry your usage of preposition. What unseemly behavior from an emperor!
i miss new york.
and i have no vote points. (but soon!!)
ditto those two things
and beautiful photos
DIY-Voting for (1) now I've been to NY's MOMA; (2) walking down 5th Ave; (3) translation exercises; (4) pictures of meals; (5) paying close attention and finding SFØ on your menu.
OMG! I totally love the LOLz! Ha! Art history is totally funnier now! LOL! ::::giggle:::
I didn't just vote because we are related, seriously.
I said to myself, "Wow - Myrna has managed to get not one but TWO relatives to become active players. That's impressive."
Name changes continue to confuse me.
Oh, and there are some really beautiful photos here.
You get my first vote of this era, Myrna. These pictures made my day!
WAS THAT SO HARD?! Gawd!
