July 27th, 2010 8:17 PM / Location: 41.986718,-87.65185With rules plucked from the books and many nerdy discussions about the proper "canon" and such, we took to the fields with a game of Quidditch!! We adjusted the rules several times during breaks, in order to improve the safety of the players.
"I know the tension is high everyone, but safety first!" - Amby D, official Quidditch documenter
Two comments from Julian Muffinbot regarding canon:
1. We realize that, in the books, Ravenclaw's team colors are blue and bronze, but we used the movie colors, blue and silver, because everyone was a little more likely to own some silver things already.
2. A sample canon argument on game day was regarding scoring. The official, canon scoring mechanism is pretty ridiculous - a team needs 15 hard-fought Quaffle goals at 10 points each to equal a single Snitch-catch at 150 points. Several people wanted to change the scoring mechanism for our game, but strict canon interpreters convinced the nay-sayers to play the "real" way. After all, ridiculous or no, Quidditch's scoring mechanism is part of the game, and the Seeker must have a chance to be a true hero that has nothing whatsoever to do with the rest of the game.

PRE-GAME TRASH-TALK

Round One (5 minutes) - Ravenclaw 10, Hufflepuff 0
Round Two (5 minutes) - Ravenclaw 20, Hufflepuff 10
Round Three (5 minutes) - Ravenclaw 20, Hufflepuff 20
**Special Cupcake Break!**
Final Round (10 minutes) - Ravenclaw 20, HUFFLEPUFF 30
It was a close and exciting game on the Quidditch pitch. The teams were well-matched, and with skilled flying, Quaffle-tossing, and Bludging, combined with tight defense from the Keepers, the teams kept the scores low and close in each round of play. Ravenclaw opened the scoring with a goal by chaser Togashi Ni, but it was answered in the next round by Hufflepuff chaser Happy McDeath. A second goal from Togashi Ni kept Ravenclaw in the lead entering the next period, but that would be the last Ravenclaw score. Happy McDeath scored for Hufflepuff again in Round 3, tying the game, after which all players took a break for cupcakes.
There were several extremely close calls throughout as Hufflepuff seeker Dela Dejavoo and Ravenclaw seeker Gremlin very nearly managed to pull the white kerchief from the golden pants of the Snitch, but the Snitch managed to evade each attack. Many attempts at goals or passes were prevented with well-timed Bludger attacks. In the last round of play, Hufflepuff chaser Katja scored what would eventually be the winning goal ("FOR CEDRIC!"), as Ravenclaw was unable to answer with either another Quaffle through the hoop, or a game-winning catch from their Seeker.
INDIVIDUAL PLAYER PROFILES/COMMENTS:
"Hufflepuff played a very aggressive game. I was reminded again why their mascot is the badger. I do think there was some unnecessary roughness on their side, but since the Ref didn't call it we valiantly soldiered on."
- Togashi Ni, Ravenclaw Chaser
"I'm not a sporty person, but actually, catching and throwing the 'Quaffle' was far easier than 'flying'. Putting a broom between your legs is surprisingly hobbling! Actually, I woke up the next morning with some good bruises on my thighs."
- Rowena Rumple-Plumpen, Ravenclaw Chaser (known to the Muggles as MsGoblinPants Extraordinaire)
"We're Loyal! And, okay, so we played a little dirty... but no penalties were called and no one was turned into a toad by the ref! Sorry for tackling you Togashi (but you were asking for it)!
- Happy McDeath, Hufflepuff Chaser
"The Hufflestuff may have defeated us this time... but revenge will belong to Ravenclaw. And to my opponent Beater, Minimal Monk, I would like to extend a post-game handshake and promise to work some more on the new Charm we are creating together, the Charm to Cause Wind Blowing in Opposite Directions at the Same Time."
- Shadowthong, Ravenclaw Beater (aka Julian Muffinbot)
"This...*gasp*... this was a...*gasp*... really good... *breath* game. *Deep inhale* Next time... *wheeze*... that snitch will...be mine. Hopefully that time... I won't hit myself... in my girl bits with my trusty broom."
- Gremlin, Ravenclaw Seeker
(But seriously, folks.
Here's my absolute favorite moment of the game: The Hufflepuff seeker and I were flying neck in neck through the Hufflepuff's goal zone, on the tail of the snitch. Our field was remarkably close to a highly used bike path, and it became fairly common for folks to stop and watch us on occasion. In this particular instant, though, a pair of cyclists whizzed by, looked at us for but a second, and one of them threw a fist to the sky and shouted "QUIDDITCH!!!" at the top of his lungs.
The entire rest of the game was on the other side of the field, so it's probable that none of them heard this. But it was an extremely proud moment. - Gremlin )
"A well played game by all. Chaos reigned in the early periods, but order was wrought in the end. A pointy hat tip to fellow beater, Shadowthong for her fair play and good competition." My favorite part was screaming, "Bludgeoned!" to indicate when a bludger had met it's mark.
- Minimal Monk, Hufflepuff Beater
For a bunch of bookworms, the Ravenclaws proved to be a formidable opponent. The badger spirit, however, is tough to beat. FOR CEDRIC!
-Jefftown™, Hufflepuff Chaser
"Aye, a well played game throughout. We almost had 'em, but it seemed as if the very trees were against us at the end."
- Rabid Badger, Ravenclaw Chaser; Not Affiliated with Hufflepuff, thank you
I don't really know why witches always try to chase me, but I know enough to run away! I have learned that the less clothes I wear, the more distracting and aerodynamic I am. Say what you want, but I haven't been caught yet!

I wish you could have too! Maybe you'd have turned the tide for poor geeky Ravenclaw!
Please! You guys got hit with some Unnecessary Huffness!
No? Fine. You got HUFFLESTUFFED!
Looks like great fun...
Agree with you on the tension between scoring mechanics for a good game versus a good narrative element. At the Harry Potter convention quidditch games, folks have had to lower the snitch catching points quite a bit to achieve game balance.
points for fun
points for bruises
points for the snitch's costume - as it directly relates to Not The intended Use!
Mostly, I think we just enjoy having Mr. O in next to nothing, with a splash of color.
Absolute Magnificence!!!!
I wish I could have been there!!!
