I hate to be the one to say this, Lincoln, as I have a lot of respect for you, but you've got to stop shooting down peoples' praxes. You don't seem to have posted a fully positive comment in a while. It's just a game!
But does that not hint that everything else has been crap up to that point?
It is only out of my puerile need to work in a criticism-free zone, ignore me if you want :P
But does that not hint that everything else has been crap up to that point?
No more than Ink Tea's tendency to be sparing with her praise means she thinks most things that happen on this site are crap.
I have to say, there is a difference between sparse praise and negative commentary.
To be withholding of one's praise makes said praise a bit of a prize to strive for.
Criticism for the sake of criticism just begins to feel negative. I think the new voting system speaks for itself. If you don't give a full 5 points there is obviously a reason why, there is no need to critique a praxis for its lower score. This isn't a senior thesis grade... this is, as stated, a game.... and it is meant to be fun.
Also, the fact that each of us interpret the tasks differently is what makes the game so much fun. If everyone had the same interpretation the game would be rather boring.
If Lincoln wants a personal praxis, then he should do it himself, and leave Moustache Envy's interpretation alone.
I'm with you on that part; I for one love personal praxis, but it's far from the only good way to task. I think this was lovely, but it's not what I would have done.
I don't know, maybe it's just because I come from a philosophy background, but I find negative criticism as helpful as praise in these cases (albeit not as pleasant). It helps you to refine your thoughts and feelings, and put your finger on just why you feel as you do about your experience...
I mean it's not as if he was just calling her names and telling her that her praxis sucked. Also, read the last line - nice and positive praise.
I actually agree most with Minch when she says -
"Also, the fact that each of us interpret the tasks differently is what makes the game so much fun. If everyone had the same interpretation the game would be rather boring."
- but I would argue that this is as true of people's reactions to the praxis as it is to the task itself. Sometimes people's reaction to my praxis has been as interesting to me as actually doing the praxis in the first place.
I'll agree with that Mr Everyday. I am also fascinated by the comment threads... an the seemingly small things that people get into deeper discussion about.
I agree Ben & Minch. I'm sorry if my criticism is unnecessary or unwanted. I just thought she did a fantastic job, and wanted to explain why she wasn't getting a full five points. It's not because it isn't really good, it's just because I'm a bit weird. If I'd just given a one point vote and not said anything, I was afraid it would come off as a slight. I think the work she did was worth more than one point, but because of a few weird hang-ups I have I didn't feel right about giving her more than the one. I wanted her to understand what strange space my brain occupies.
I will no longer criticize praxis.
haha, what's funny is i'm glad you wrote out your thoughts, as predicted i would have indeed been *just a tad* miffed about only getting one point from you!
... and not saying anything at all wouldn't have sparked this excellent discussion!
i can see how one could interpret this praxis as very broad, but frankly everything I've presented here is of equal weight to me - so if it's a personal praxis you were desiring, I cannot think of a better encapsulation of myself than this! for me, there is no body without the arm, the pinky finger, the fingernail, etc etc
to me it all belongs, and i to all of it!
I see that, which is why it's a great completion, but when I was thinking of doing this myself, I thought about claiming Venice Blvd. as my street and the piece of beach between pier 27 & 28 in Venice as my beach and the mountain just North and West of the Griffith Observatory to be my peak, and the Sacred Fools theater to be my church, but then realized that there could be somebody else in the world (and probably is) that claimed all of those things as theirs, so they didn't point a very good picture of ME. I am looking for things that can only be associated with me. But only because I've thought about it too much. I'm glad others are giving you more points because this is good stuff.
Hey Lincoln - don't you DARE stop criticizing praxi. When I was starting out on SF0 your little gems of wisdom were one of the things that kept me going, and trying to craft a better complete... In a very real way this praxis wouldn't have been made without YOU (because I wouldn't have submitted this task is why ;->).
And I can see why you might want to make something that is unique to you, but funnily enough it's intended to work the opposite way in it's original cultural context... The Maori used to be VERY tribal (never considered themselves one "people" until after colonisation), and warlike (they won just about every battle they ever fought against the British, but wiped each other out because the europeans sold them guns - good job guys. The point of the Mihi was to make connections between individuals visiting other tribes, and basically give you an excuse for not killing the other guy. The full formal ones listing specific ancestry can go on for 5 or 6 hours and are considered somewhat Tapu (you aren't really meant to let historians write them all down from what I understand... though I'm not Maori myself, so take that with a grain of salt).
If you AND that guy there both belong to the mountain you can't fight see...
thoughtful critique is always more meaningful than praise alone
and it always seems that humans are just plain stubborn about resisting the urge to fear and hate the strange, and have always needed excessive explanations (mihi, relentless scientific inquiry into human genealogy, etc) to just prove the simple fact that deep down we all share the same roots as Homo sapiens.
True, we can be vastly incongruous and different - but personally i'd like to think people would rather live at peace with their neighbor than be in constant conflict with them.
Competition, on the other hand, is different ;D
I loved how thorough you were with this! I'm kind of inspired to go do one of my own now. :)
Very very nice job. You get full marks from me, not just because I liked the praxis, but also because of your knowledge of the tikanga - I'd almost suspect you'd done that before. Kia Ora.
I like your Mihi, because it is not just about you.. It is about the people around you and having fun and being part of something larger.
I definitely got that sense, too--I think this is the first Mihi I've voted for (maybe precisely because it goes beyond what the task asks for).
Here, have a vote. I'm giving you one point because I feel that your praxis, while very thorough is also a bit too broad for my tastes. I suppose I was hoping for a Mihi that was highly personal and specific to one person, and some of yours clearly are, but some are so loose and broad as to become less personal.
But everything that is here is well done. Good jorb.
