February 9, 2010: 20 copies posted.

Life beats down and crushes the soul, and art reminds you that you have one. --Stella Adler
She might as well have said, "Lowell beats down and crushes your soul, and art would remind you that you had one if you could ever find the time to go to a gallery or a concert between your resume-padding extracurriculars, five million hours of homework per night, and the time you need to study for those four tests tomorrow."

We need reminders sometimes that life is not supposed to be this painful. That, in fact, it is prohibited for us to be "held in slavery or servitude" or "subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment." I'm hoping that anyone who see the copies posted next to the AP and SAT study books in the library will read Articles 4 and 5.

Here are a few of the other ones we put up... we didn't take pictures of all of them because that would be boring, picture after picture of flyer-on-wall.

Here's the previous one in context of the courtyard.

Look, someone's reading this one!:

By mid-March, all of our flyers were gone except for this one:

And that's because it's at the bottom of a stairwell that the fun police (administration and security guards) never bother using. Very few people use that particular area, actually, they just pass through it very quickly. It did disappear before the end of the school year, however.

I wouldn't say our campaign was much of a success. I doubt many Lowellites stopped to read the Declaration. Or maybe they stopped, read a sentence or two, went, "Ugh, what is this?" and carried on.

But maybe a few people did stop and read it, and maybe it mattered to them. I can only hope so.
