Tasks / The Common Library

This task is retired.

"My fellow Sf0. This is an experiment on altruism. In a society obsessed with ownership, the concept of COMMON should be kept alive, so we do not forget that there are things we cannot ever claim to be ours. - The COOKIE "

Donate a book to the Common Library.

Write the following onto the back of the front cover, or first pages. Then give it to someone who you think will enjoy or make use of it. Tell them about the Common Library.

***
Property of the Commons

The Common Library is a collection of books that no one entity owns. The books in this collection belong to absolutely everyone.

Copyright and intellectual rights apply as stated in the book, in accordance to local laws.

The books cannot be sold or exchanged by anyone and will stay in the public domain as long as they physically exist.

There is no library building. While the book is in your custody you are the keeper. Once you have finished with it, pass it on to the next keeper.

We ask you as the keeper to treat the book well and not hold on to it any longer than needed. If the book is damaged beyond repair, we ask you to replace it, to the best of your ability.

The Common library relies on donations. To donate a book, write this message on to the front of the book an pass it on.

How to give a book to everyone... +1

Please give suggestions, if you think that the text to be written on the book needs to be altered or is missing something crucial. This is one task I really want to do, and will probably do regardless of wether it is accepted. I challenge you all to join me to create a new literary commonwealth.

No one. Really?

Come on, some one else must want to collaborate on this with me. I'm not running this branch of the library on my own.

OK, Waldo.

I'm in.

Interesting.

I like it.

My first suggestion would be to make the text shorter.

I would also include a link to a nicely formatted pdf / ps / etc file for printing. It's easier and (for some of us, anyway) more legible to print that out and glue or tape it in place.

One tiny nitpick about an otherwise great idea:

While that copy can remain truly public property for its entire existence, the phrase "public domain" has a specific meaning that does not apply to most works written after 1923.

But yeah this rocks and I am so in.

A common resource and a common meaning. We can do this. ~Waldo

Both good ideas.

My edit, please comment/advise/revise:

****
This book is from the collection of The Common Library

The Common Library does not have a physical location; books in The Common Library belong to everyone. These books may not be sold, and must be freely passed from reader to reader for as long as they physically exist.

Please treat this book well. If the book is damaged beyond repair, please replace it, to the best of your ability. When you've finished using it, you must provide this book to someone else.

The Common Library relies on donations for growth. To donate a book, simply place a copy of this message on the inside of the front cover and pass it on!
