The Death of Public Life In The Age of Insatiability by teucer
January 14th, 2008 9:15 PM
Note: blue text indicates activities which are private, while red text indicates public actions. Things in green text are semipublic, usually because they're private actions taken to prepare for more public ones. (For instance, the brewing - I've put this off long enough that it almost certainly won't be ready on schedule, but I'd like to bring a quantity of braggot to a forthcoming SCA event.)
For purposes of this praxis, "private" life is that which does not involve interaction with the rest of society. I've also chosen to define my day as lasting only about twelve hours - you can assume that my time after midnight was spent quietly lounging in my room not waking anybody else up. It should be noted that by this definition going to work would qualify as "public" - but I'm unemployed, so this didn't happen.
I should mention that my life is more public - but admittedly not a whole lot more - on weekends and Thursdays. Still, the basic conclusion here is kind of a depressing one. I spent three-quarters of my time today interacting with nobody outside of my immediate family, and it's that low only if you count two minutes spent preparing for public interaction as one spent doing it.
Public life is dead, at least as experienced by introverts who are away from their friends and lack jobs. I can't wait to get back out of this state.
0930 - ignored my alarm and went back to sleep
0930-1200 slept
1200 - woke up
1210 - decided this was a good day to see my public life be dead, and started this praxis
1215-1230 - made & ate breakfast
1230 - felt surprisingly satiated
1230-1300 - made the first mockup of an item which will become part of a praxis, and sent pictures to my collaborator along with a more precise description of how I intended the item to be constructed
1300-1430 - mashed grains for braggot (a style of mead containing malted grains) - this time actually included a fair amount of goofing off and checking sf0 and so forth, as boiling several gallons of water and sterilizing a six-gallon fermenter are both very slow processes that don't really require your full attention.
1430-1500 - did nefarious things in my lab - I mean, um, walked the dogs. All over the neighborhood where various people I don't know saw me and can corroborate that I wasn't up to anything evil whatsoever. Really, I swear.
1500-1800 - looked for a job. (OK, I confess there was also some watching of Lost mixed in... we'll call this one blue-and-a-half. Cyan, maybe?)
1800-1830 - fed dogs, let them out for a bit, plus generally hung out around the house for a little while.
1830-1930 - went to dinner at the home of a family friend.
1930-1945 - played with dogs
1945-2000 - walked dogs
2000-2100 - chilled out in my room, discussing SF0 with various persons online - including planning for a completion of CHEAT!
2100-2330 - watched television with a dwindling portion of my family.
