April 15th, 2008 2:23 PM / Location: 38.974936,-76.93034

INSTRUCTIONS: Bury something. Contact another player that you don't know in real life and give them instructions on where to dig it up. Your instructions can be either straight-forward or cryptic.

When you contact them you should also invite them as a collaborator on the task.

A cryptic message brought to me by Antonio, crewman to the notorious Spidere...what lies within?

In the bottle

Could it be...a treasure map?

the map unfurled

A map to pirate booty! We peruse it by firelight, and make plans to set sail.

"Belt o' Green" and "Ye College Park" lead us to discern that we must traverse beyond known lands into uncharted suburban waters. Luckily, my first mate has some familiarity with this foreign country.

land, ho!

land, ho!

A testament to my first mate's excellent navigational skills - he'd not been beyond the borders of Washington DC, and we used no maps but the one provided in these photos.

two poles

The map shows two poles next to each other, with the treasure at the base of the easternmost. Could this be where we dig?

no X here...

This sandy spot looked likely...BUT...these poles orient north-south, so this cannot be the easternmost! We forge ahead.

Two green metal poles jut from the landscape, oriented east-west. We scout for interlopers...the coast is clear.

A chest full of chocolate coins, eyepatch, lanyard, rubber stamp, and a Jolly Roger (which I put on a stick from the park and waved from our ship at everyone we passed for the rest of our entire journey, to the amusement of my first mate).

My gratitude, Spidere, for this treasure hunt! May your sails and coffers stay full.

And now..."the making of". :)

And now..."the making of". :)

When zer0gee asked me to collaborate with her on this, the first thing I thought of was buried treasure--thus, a pirate chest with plenty of piratical loot contained within.

Filled with doubloons!

Filled with doubloons!

The most important thing would be to fill with shiny, tasty pirate loot.

Piratical

Piratical

I felt like I should be in character to bury the treasure.

Buried.

Buried.

For the record, I am still self-conscious enough to feel a little strange walking around dressed like a pirate, with a shovel and a treasure chest. It didn't stop me, of course. I'm also quite glad that I buried it well enough that no one could tell it was buried, except via the map. That's important in burying treasure.

The map

I kept thinking I was missing something, seeing your player photo and not seeing the associated task, zer0gee. Great tasking, all around.

Oh. This reminds me of a going away treasure hunt we did for a friend of mine's going away party. I'm simultaneously heartened and kind of nostalgically sad.

I demand that you describe Antonio and the hand-off of the map.

Dax:

It was brief and un-piratey, so I didn't emphasize it in the proof. I was waiting for the Stephen King reading to start, when at the appointed time of 6pm I noticed a young man in a long dark coat with a large spider pin on his lapel. He stood at the edge of the crowd, looking at a handheld device (I assume at a photo of me). He matched up the image with the person, came over, and handed me the bottle. I thanked him and tried to introduce myself, but he quickly departed. :( Perhaps Spidere had instructed him not to interact with me very much?

My instructions were simply to bring and deliver the bottle to you. I informed him of where you would be, and when, as well as giving him photos of you so he could identify you and the spider pin so that you could identify him. I had talked with him about the map and my burying location, so he may have just wanted to avoid giving anything away. :) I was really impressed that you made it there from a totally different direction than I'd expected, too--it was great to read your account of planning and finding!
