INSTRUCTIONS: The first task reads: "Take a picture of yourself. " This is the only time a sous rature gesture will be made, so let us remind you: you may be your character, but your character need not be you.

Nov 3rd, 2008
One year ago today, Jane McGonigal posted on her blog about a game called SF0.

The next day I signed up.

And tommorow, I'll have been playing SF0 for one year now.

I can say, with no doubt in my mind, that SF0 is the best thing to have happened to me in the last year. Nothing else even comes close. The people I have met, the wonder I have seen, the things I have done, the things I have learned, the things I have seen. And I am a different person for it. A better person, even. Braver, smarter, and happier.

I would like to thank Sam, Sean, and Ian, for making this game. I'd like to thank MN0: Dark Aardvark, Burn Unit, Ink Tea, Star5, OliverX, and everybody else. I'd like to thank Rongo Rongo and Dax. I'd like to thank everyone who's praxis have inspired me. Hell, I'd like to thank everybody.

It's been a weird fucking year.

I have every reason to believe the next ones going to be even weirder.

Can't wait.

Thank you. That actually means a lot to me - for a while there I was thinking that I was the only one who found it that funny.

I appear to have been vote spammed by herbs and spices. Most irregular.

Unless, of course, these are actually fine gentlemen with similar names who appreciate my unique style of tasking and not automata at all. In which case, thank you.

I don't think so though.

To be exact, Gingko, Cayenne, Ginseng, and Coriandor have voted for all of my Insatiability tasks and no other tasks. I anticipate that Tumeric may soon follow suit.

More collaborations with JJason!

But seriously, what?

Hey, you're only collaborating with me for my access to the herb and spices vote!

But seriously, I figure it's the return of whatever sinister forces were behind the suzybots and the probots.

Hmm... I wasn't aware that Alpha was a spice.

Edit: Curses! If Calyx also turns out to be a bot I'll be left tantalizingly close to level 8, but not there. Curse you bots! Can't I taste godhood, if only for a moment?

They misspelled Turmeric. That's how you can tell they're evil robots. Humans can taste.

Incorrect.

When you're a senator, the correct term is "herb and spices constituency".

Calyx totally fits the pattern; it's a part of a plant.

And yes, it's supposed to be turmeric. Also ginkgo.

I am of the opinion that SF0 shenanigans must not mess with the workings of the game, or else they are not inherently different from the spicebots. And any praxis which results ought to be flagged.

Aah.

posted by teucer on July 21st, 2008 8:51 PM

Sure it is. Which means it's up to the users to decide what modes of play are worth rewarding and what modes are to be deemed not cool.

As one of those users, I've made the decision that I don't like people hijacking my account in non-humorous ways.

hey, whatever.

For those of you who do not know, Teucer is referring to a curious ritual that I perform every year on my birthday. On that day I travel to a house in the middle of the city, where I meet with myself on all of my previous birthdays. There I perform a short "state of the JJason" address where I explain to them how my past year has gone and my goals for the future year. Then there is an extended question and answer period where I am interrogated by past versions of myself about the validity of my goals. This year I must say that my twelfth birthday’s critics were particularly pointed and, therefore, particularly helpful.

Once the talk has been finished, we break for the traditional meal of toast with cheese sauce, rice, and coconut, followed of course by cake. Then my previous birthdays put on a short play. This year they did a very nice version of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead. Much better than Titus Andronicus last year, I will say.

That’s the end of the ritual portions of the evening and we usually then relax by dressing up in elaborate masks and the costumes of 18th century admirals, go to Teucer’s house, and throw various things that happen to be lieing around at his windows while loudly chanting. Afterwords I am bid my past selves goodnight and make my way home. I find this ritual leaves me refreshed and ready to face my next year.
