Eye of Horus by JJason Recognition, Darkaardvark

August 22nd, 2010 11:56 AM

INSTRUCTIONS: The body of Osirus has been hidden in the environs of the city by Set and his minions. In each part of the game you will recover a part: the head, the heart, the hands and the feet.

YOU are limited, your flesh and your body. But your camera reaches across space and freezes time, it is your wedjat, the eye of action.

Your camera is the eye that ignores the restrictions put upon you and slips past artificial barriers, snares light and holds it in place, creates a relationship between viewer and viewed, and unlocks the spirit of the subject and the photographer.

Eye of Horus was played as a street game in Minneapolis on August 15, 2010. Players are urged to document their experiences here.

Darkaardvark: Game HQ
I arrive at game headquarters to meet the strangers I am to team up with, only to be quickly cast among a new group of strangers as their Watcher- part referee, part player, part secret agent. Round 1 consists of a photo scavenger hunt.

We take photos from the non-literal, like this, for flour/bread:

Flour or bread

To the very literal, like this, for "a river":

The River

I do my part and Watch, but also offer suggestions on photo opportunities. It seems silly not to participate (and dull!). I also shadow the team's photos with my own camera so as to have documentation for just such a proof as this.

The second round consists of a similar task, only this time the items need to be done in order, and the photographer is blindfolded. The team picks a photographer for the first half of the items, and the Watcher (me) does the other half. Doing the items in order actually focused us quite a bit on finding a suitable subject for each photo, and we moved much more quickly through this list.

My favorite photo of the game (probably because it was my idea) was one from this round, taken for the word "lies" (The sign says 'No Tobacco Use'):

Lies

Also this one, for "a curse":

A curse

The third round was a little different. All the Watchers split off from the groups they were following, and were given pink armbands. While teams took their photos for this round (with their photographer blindfolded) the Watchers were now Minions of Set, whose goal was to insert themselves surreptitiously into the photos to penalize that team and gain points for their own team.

This proved much easier said than done, since with coaching from their team, the blindfolded photographer could reposition the camera or simply wait until the Minion gave up (the Minions had to stay 10 feet away). Still, I think there were some successes by Minions in this round, if not many.

Then we all returned to headquarters for Round 4.

Round 4

This was essentially a game of Apples to Apples, where each team, competing head-to-head, used the photos they had taken to come up with a photo that matched an adjective given each round. Then the other teams would vote on which photo they preferred. This was a lot of fun, and one of my favorite parts of the game, since it ended up rewarding the teams that had taken more creative and interesting photos throughout the game.

All in all, much fun was had. I suggest going through the rest of the photos, since they tell the story of this event better than I can.
