What Is Real? by JJason Recognition

INSTRUCTIONS: Spend two days (or more) performing reality checks. Make it a habit. How do you know when you're awake? Do you have any personal dream signs? When you've completed this task, try lucid dreaming.

Thursday, Day 1: After reading the ways to see if you're dreaming or not in Wikipedia, I made up a small reference sheet on half an index card and put in in my wallet, right in front of my ID. That way I could be guaranteed to remember to check several times throughout the day, at least until it became enough of a habit that I didn't need to reminded. The card also served the second purpose of being a piece of text I could use to make sure that text didn't change when I looked away.

Quick check: The text is consistant. Excellent.

Friday, Day 2: Fifteen minutes after waking up - Or is it? Check the solidity of a nearby wall. Solid - I am in fact awake.
In Class: This class is kinda boring - maybe I fell asleep? Check my hand - Not distorted. Guess it wasn't that boring.
Waiting for the bus - Jumped up in the air, returned to the ground without incident. Not dreaming. I probably could've predicted that, I usually don't dream about bus stops.
At my internship - I'm pretty tired. Tired enough to fall asleep and dream of still working? Checked the text on my reference card. It stayed consistent. It was the real internship.
Bus on the way back - Could the bus have lulled me to sleep? checked the solidity of the glass. Nice and solid. Not dreaming.
After dinner - Checked a random wall for solidity. Still not dreaming.

So far, checking text, solidity, and gravity seem to be the easiest ways to check reality. Also I am not dreaming in all of the times checked so far.

Saturday, Day 3: Woke up - Or did I? Turned on the lights successfully. Guess I should get out of bed.
Breakfast - This bagel is tasty. Too tasty to be real? Checked the packaging, told me that I was eating everything bagels both times. Excellent.
At the Library - Is the trouble I had borrowing a digital camera a creation of my anxiety-riddled mind? A test of the solidity of the counter top indicates no. I guess they just don't do it very often.
At home - Checked the mirror real quick to make sure I hadn't fallen asleep between home and here. The image was perfect. Not asleep.
While writing this - Better make sure that I'm actually doing this, not just dreaming about it*. I'd hate to waste all that effort. Attempted to teleport to the kitchen, without success. Oh well.

All in all, I've found doing reality checks an entirely positive experience. Not only does it give me something to do in idle moments, I can now go forth into the world confident that what I'm experience is real and not a creation of my fevered imagination (which is a big concern for me). The next step is to continue doing this until it becomes enough of a habit that it begins to appear in my dreams, at which point I can attempt to lucid dream.

*There is some precedent for this. One time I fell asleep while watching television and dreamed of watching television. When I was awoken I was extremely surprised to learn that I had not in fact been watching television.

Here is the reference card in it's natural habitat, tucked inside my wallet. This way I'm reminded that reality is not to be taken on faith every time I pay some for something.

I like your reality checks reference card. I might make myself one of those. You know, just for the sake of it.
